If you think 'ugly' just really means 'different' and change always brings benefits, then take a gander at this and tell me with a straight face this car is not ugly: http://www.humans.com/pages/ugliestcar.shtml
Between the iMac, the Mac Pro, the Leopard interface and this if it comes out to be true, Apple's design team have really just lost it over the past few years IMO.
Wow.... and yet, all these are wildly successful products and Apple's market share continues to rise..... go figure!
PS: Of course, with Leopard, 'wild success' is speculation on my part....
Rumor or real, it's laughable to call a certain rectangle "out of proportion" as though it's some law of nature all can agree on.
Well, one proportion that is generally agreed upon for aesthetics is the Golden Ratio (approx. 1.6:1). This is why all wide-screen flat-panels have a width to height ratio of 1.6 to 1.
Now, even though this "leaked" iPod is closer to the Golden Ratio, I think that the screen and click-wheel don't balance properly. This ruins the good aesthetics for me. I think I'm rather neutral on the design. The squat design reminds me a little too much of the Zen Micro.
I don't mind the squat nature of the iPod Nano at all. If this allows it to play video and iPod games I would consider it a plus. The problem I do have is with the colors....which looked like they were ripped off from Dells new laptops.....which in turn were ripped off from 70's era refrigerators. More important is what Apple does with the 6G iPod when it comes out. The 6G really needs to be OS X based, have wi-fi and a full screen touch interface. Anything less and people will opt for the iPhone or not even upgrade if they have a 5G iPod.
I have a 5G iPod and I would pick up a 6G iPod that was like the iPhone....without the phone and it was hard drive based. Anything less and I won't even consider an iPod.
Remember when the picture of the keyboard was released and Apple legal did NOTHING about it. To some that was confirmation that the picture was fake but guess what? It was spot on. Steve Jobs even joked about it during the introduction.
Now Apple legal goes after these pictures so what does that mean? Who knows?

I guess we'll just have to wait until Tuesday.
Apple Legal flips a coin: heads they send out the wolves, tails they ignore the leak. This way no one can predict when leaked info is accurate.
... and you'll have to wait until Wednesday (Labour Day on Monday).

I can see that car being used for the taxi industry. I personally wouldn't buy one because of it's obvious looks but I wouldn't saw it's blindingly ugly. (*:blind icon:*)
I believe this is the new Nano and here's why. Think of Apple's product line and what makes sense for a consumer....
Shuffle - Music Player (Flash)
Ipod Phat Nano - Music Player + Video (Flash)
Ipod "Touch" - Music Player + Video + Internet (Wifi) and OSX Goodies (Flash and HDD choice)
Iphone - Music Player + Video + Internet + Camera + Phone (Flash)
Those 4 items should cover almost all possibilities keeping the line-up simple.
A crazy idea that would be really great for the rest of the world stuck with Sprint and Verizon. We can't get an Iphone either because our entire families are Verizon or we are stuck in a contract. How about the Ipod Touch having the ability to purchase a $20-25 a month data plan via AT&T to allow you to surf the web everywhere. My current bill plus this would equal a bill of a iphone on AT&T and I get to keep my current provider.
Well, I just bought a Nano 8 GB Red to replace the 1Gen Nano 4 GB that I'm giving to my wife to use with her new Honda Fit (she has a 1Gen shuffle). All the stories about dwindling supplies made me jump now.
It does what I want my iPod to do and I like that way it looks (though I would have preferred it in green).

Psh, he also lists the Honda Element and Cadillac CTS.
How many people do you know who watch movies on their iPod? In my case no-one. Everyone uses them strictly for music except one guy who plays the games. A bigger screen is u s e l e s s.
I use my 5.5G iPod to watch video a lot more than I use it for music.
I even installed an additional OS (Rockbox) so that I can read full length text file novels.
I really hope Apple releases a full screen iPod, but PLEASE put a text file reader on it instead of that crappy "Notes" thingie that's totally useless.
My guess on the new iPod line will look something like this:
iPod Shuffle
1 GB flash
2 GB flash
iPod nano
4 GB flash
8 GB flash
16 GB flash
iPod mini
8 GB flash
16 GB flash
32 GB flash*
6G iPod video
80 GB HD
120 GB HD
160 GB HD*
*These two will be available early 2008.
iPod mini will look like a 2G nano "writ large" with a display almost the size of the current 5.5G iPod video display, but with nano-sized Click Wheel; the thickness is about 1 mm more than the current nano and the case has rounded edges. iPod mini can play videos in the same format used by the 5.5G iPod video.
6G iPod video will look like a cross between the 5.5G iPod video (it'll use nearly the same sized case) and the iPhone with its metallic case. The display will be a full-screen 8:5 aspect ratio display with touchscreen operation in either iPhone or emulated Click Wheel style.

Which one? The male or the female?
I have some friends that like the mini's wider form factor and never got nanos because they hated the design...
That describes my impression of the Nano pretty well: it does "feel" right sitting in my hand the way that my Mini does.

We should have a little discussion about the Golden Ratio.
beat me to it...

I am still in doubts that this is for real. Apple can't be stupid enough to design a product that 75% of people in this post think sucks. Can they?...
It sure doesn't seem Steve-like. But I'm sure if it was real it would look better in-
person. If it has built in wifi (and Safari and/or Skype) and the mobile edition of the ITMS then no one would be complaining much.

Impressive.... sounds quite credible.
