The Best Browser out now

Right now, I have OmniWeb 4.0, Netscape 6 and Internet Explorer 5.2 on my G3 iBook 500. Out of these browsers, I use IE the most. Just today, however, I decided to download Netscape 6.2 and saw HUGE improvements over Netscape 6. I don't know too much about the browsers out there, but this Netscape is almost a winner out of the browsers I have on my computer. The look and feel of this browser is so nice! I dunno about java support, but I think I am probably going to switch from IE to Netscape for now. In my opinion, all it needs to be the perfect browser is to be less sluggish in starting up and a few more keyboard shortcuts, like switching from one browser window to another (which it might have but I don't know about it). I don't seem to know why people like OW so much. I personally prefer IE over OW. I especially hate that stupid UNLICENSED word they write accross your screen if you go away for like 5 minutes (yeah, I know I have to pay for it, but I don't wanna!). Anyway, I want to hear your opinion about which browser you think is the best web browser out now for OS X.

    use Mozilla. It is written from the Netscape6 source code. Now that the open source community has tweaked and debugged a lot of the code, as well as added features, Netscape 7 is being based on mozilla. They are just taking Mozilla and adding the Netscape stuff they want to it, and viola! You have Netscape 7.

    My only complaints about mozilla are small. First I don't like the toolbar can't be sized down to be really small like in IE (for windows). On Mac that is a mute point. Second, in windows it sucks at rendering animated GIFs. Just sitting idle on the screen, but with a decent sized banner ad that is an animated GIF, it will take 30-40% CPU on my windows box. This isn't the case with smaller onces (3-5%). But that can get annoying. I think this is only in the windows version though. I don't remember seeing this in the versions prior to 1.0 when I was running debian.

    When i get my TiBook I'll try Chimera, but when it gets closer to a 1.0 release. The only mozilla spin-off that is stable enough and has features enough for me is Galeon, but that only runs in GNOME on linux. Not sure how well that would run through GNOME ontop of OS X though. (Galeon was started earlier than Chimera was, it's already past 1.0 IIRC.)

    Upgrade from OmniWeb 4.0 to 4.1. It makes a huge difference. Great speed(not as fast as Chimera), beautiful interface.

    In my personal speed tests (Apple.com, etc) Netscape 6.2.3 takes every other browser out there, rolls it up, and smokes it. Like this --&gt; <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />



    Mozilla is FAST, that's for sure. But it just doesn't feel as good as IE. I hope Microsh*t releases IE 6 soon, since from 5 to 5.2.1 hasn't added much. Omniweb I tried once, but I guess it's an acquired taste. It's good but not enough to make me want to switch from IE.



    Never tried Chimera. How's it doing in terms of feature completeness?

    i used to use IE, then i tried OW; and inevitably moved to OW, but at the time, still used IE pretty regularly. Then I checked out Mozilla. For a few months i thought it was the browser to end all browsers; i deleted ow and ie. then i tried chimera. chimera is the greatest thing since bread. it's wicked fast, and based on the scrumdidilyumtiousness of mozilla. i love chimera. [now i use chimera]

    By the way do others have that problem of when say you select to put a url in your post the lil window that pops up shows your input as ******* style things?

    Having used Moz 1.1b since release, and tried Chimera recently, I couldn't stand Chimera! Granted it has a nicer and more responsive GUI, but the features are just not quite there. I'll wait until 1.0 or whenever it converges with Mozilla again. In the mean time, I'm sticking to Mozilla. (I'll give OW another later...wasn't too impressed last time I tried it on OS X.0...

    I tried chimera last night and I wasn't impressed. It crashed 4 times in the hour that I used it. You are right, it is the fastest, but not stable. I will give it another try when a new version comes out. Right now, I will stick with OW. I think that it is the best available. I looks so good!!!! After that I would have to go with Mozilla.

    Definitely Mozilla with the Pinstripe theme...almost looks like an aqua app, but not as annoying or processor intensive.

    The latest build (8/8/02) of Chimera is the most stable build in a long time. I have used it now for a couple of hours without a crash. It also seems to be the fastest.

    I really love Mozilla, Chimera is good but I've been having problems with it lately...

    holy crap! my CPU usage on a 500Mhz iBook went down by like 20+%!!! o_O my 320kbps encoded MP3s no longer skip either!

    I've tried using OmniWeb 4.1, but it's incredibly S---L---O---W! I tried running it on my iMac DV SE/400 MHz/640 MB RAM, but it still crawls.



    I'm trying to wean myself off of Internet Explorer. I tried Chimera, but it just didn't 'feel' right. Maybe I'll try it again whenever version 1.0 comes out. These days, my time is spent using Mozilla...and to think I once said I'd never go back to Netscape...

    Do any of you know of a site that has a ton of Mozilla Themes... I can't find any half way descent sites at all!!!
