Trying To Install MS Windows version 1.0 into Virtual PC

Hi all. I was looking for something for my friend today on the program called Direct Connect (for more information on that see my other thread) and I found the *RARE* Microsoft Windows version 1.0!!

The only thing is I'm having trouble installing it as I have no working floppy drive here on my iBook. It comes on 5 floppy disks. I've tried to burn all of its files to a CD but that didn't work. I've tried to set it as a shared folder but that didn't work. How can I make the folders that contain the Win 1.0 files into a bootable floppy disc image? Eveytime I uncapture the DOS boot disk that came with VPC it tries to read from it and it's not there to be read from. I've tried using Apple's Disk Copy and then a resource editor to change its file type. Virtual PC sees that but it doesn't know what to do with it

Can anyone help me with this? I really dislike Windows but I'm curious to see how primitive Version 1 was.

Thanks in advance,

Proud iBook Owner

PS If you want a copy of it I'd be glad to send it to you. The compressed RAR file is EXACTLY 1 Megabyte and is perfectly e-mail-able.

So long as you saved all of the disks as folders from their original names, you should be able to do this just fine.

Just make open Disk Copy and make a new blank image, set the size to whatever is appropriate and the format to MS-DOS. Name it appropriately then click OK when you are done, and drag all the files from whatever folder you used the name from on the CD to the disk. Close the disk and unmount it, this should save it and make it read-only.

I found that floating around DC a few months ago too, but I didn't do anything with it. Try making a disk image of those folders and mounting them. That might work.

yeah like i thought.. it wont work like that..... Is there anyone here who could make me images of these floppies that VPC *WILL* read? THis is getting annoying because i really wanna try out the primitive Windows. DMGs just arent cutting it.

Not .dmg, Wintel crap has no idea what the hell that extension even means. Let alone knows how to read it.

Chant with me now, when you convert the image, set the format to MS-DOS.

    MS-DOS, MS-DOS, MS-DOS...

I suppose if you email me the disk images, *1* per day, I can write them to floppies on my wallstreet and install them on VPC 4, then send you a stuffed vpc image to boot from.

why cant i send you them all at once? All together theyre only 500k or so, 1 meg at the most. What's your email address?

oh and spart: if you can tell *HOW* to change the format from .DMG or IMG to something else that would be a great help. I made the images under Mac OS X. Is there a program that makes IMGs under X? I know the Classic version of Disk Copy make IMGs... Anyone? Please i really wanna get ahead on this.

Something you might have over looked...

press apple-D when in Virtual PC to open the disk assistant. The second option on the box that appears will allow you to create a new floppy disk image that VPC WILL be able to read.

    Just a thought!

Blueflame: yes i saw that and i tried to install but i couldnt even get it to read the disk. I need to have the DOS Boot Disk "captured" so to speak... any suggestions?

Hmm, strange problem you're having. Can you install a bootable system from the bootdisk you're using and then install off the windows v.1 disks? Hopefully it won't go *blaugh* because VPC comes with PC-DOS, not MS-DOS. Give it a shot!

PS - E-mail me a copy and I'll muck around with them to see if I can get this working, then I'll tell you what I did; all this guesswork doesn't seem to be helping too much.
