Time for iChat upgrade?

Well the Jaguar's feet haven't hit the streets and already I'm asking for an upgrade...you just can't please people like me....

But seriously, Yahoo's IM now <a href="http://news.com.com/2100-1023-949876.html?tag=fd_top"; target="_blank">has added support for almost-broadcast quality video.</a> Pretty soon we're going to be calling our monitors a "viewscreen" just like our friends on the Enterprise.

What does this mean for iChat and has the Videophone's time finally arrived?

Almost broadcast quality video? I hate to be the nitpick here....

But they don't mention any resolution at all in the article, and it is only 20fps. Broadcast quality for WHAT medium? The Internet?

iChat won't get videoconferencing until AIM does, and AIM won't get videoconferencing until AOL is ready to open up for interoperability.

That is, of course, unless Apple has some clever way around that..

Just include a plug-in that only works for Rendezvous first and then sneak it into AIM part of iChat.... go apple!

iChat already has some support for upcoming audio and video streaming built in. Combined with QuickTime Broadcaster, QuickTime unicast streaming and rendezvous that is not too far away from now. I think a Q1/2003 intro is likely.
