hrm, there are quite a few options:

    1. get the original divx codec ( <a href="http://divx.com"; target="_blank">divx.com</a> )

    2. use divx doctor 2 to convert it to a 3ivx movie <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=14266&db=mac"; target="_blank">vt link</a>

    3. try videolan client ( <a href="http://www.videolan.org"; target="_blank">vlc</a>

vlc always worked well for me

    hope this helps

These avi files must be of those 'business sort' (ahem!) and are of utmost importance! I reccomend you get a dedicated por- ... er... sorry, I meant a dedicated PC Box to view the really 'freaky stuff' which comes in via AVI. Curious is how rapidly they are diminishing in light of better mpgs. Thoughts anyone else? Unless the video is 'too much a must have' I generally trash um and replace with better MPEGS. Remember, business before pleasure.

I don't understand why quicktime didn't include a AVI encoder? It makes no sense.............................

"An" AVI decoder? Which AVI decoder? That's part of the problem. There are several. And I think each one has its own legal issues.

I've never really understood why Macs can't view AVI files. but I really think the problem is more legal than technical.

You know, I don't get it either. At work, I have some Indeo-encoded AVIs, which work well with QT in OS9, but not in OSX. I find that so annoying.

I end up exporting the AVIs under QT in Classic, and then reading them in again under OSX.

VLC (<a href="http://videolan.org"; target="_blank">www.videolan.org</a>) seems to read the other AVIs well, but I haven't tried exporting from there. I don't even know if it's possible. I use it mainly to watch SVCDs.

Yeah, about SVCDs and the Mac... okay, that's another topic.

Can we ask just exactly what it is that you have in AVI format that you need to see ASAP? Inquiring minds need to know!

<img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> Sheesh, I'm surprised this discussion has gone on so long without a correct answer to this predicament.

An AVI file is a movie container, similar to a QuickTime movie. QuickTime can play AVI files just fine.

However, like QuickTime, AVI files have their own sets of codecs. There are video codecs and audio codecs. While Apple has several of these included with QuickTime, it certainly does not have all of them. That would require the people who first wrote the codec for the PC to come and code a version for the Mac. That just isn't going to happen. Intel, for example, has several codecs that many AVIs use called Indeo. Indeo versions 2 and 3 were ported to work in Mac OS 8-9, but Intel decided it wasn't worth the resources to port it to Mac OS X.

So, you are stuck with a few options. Either get AVI content that uses a codec that's built into QuickTime, use Virtual PC to play said AVI, or get a cheap PC for your porn playback. Oops, I meant "multimedia" playback.

I forgot about Divx. Download this and you can play back AVIs:

    <a href="http://www.divx.com/divx/maclinux.php"; target="_blank">http://www.divx.com/divx/maclinux.php</a>;
