not true.... some people got them with new machines in the past week.... also come pre-loaded with the new towers

not true... I should be able to use AIM if i want to (and I will)
iChat sucks if you have your b/l organized into different groups and you like to look at people's profiles and change your own profile often... iChat sucks in comparison to AIM WRT these features...

No, iChat is not suppose to completely replace AIM. If you want to use the clunky old official AIM client, by all means, you can. If you don't like the stability, organization, lack of ads, lowered CPU usage, and cocoa services available in iChat, Adium, Fire, and Proteus... sure -- you can keep using the old AIM app.
Though, I do suspect there will may be an update from AOL after 10.2 is "officially" released.
I thought iChat was gonna be the sh*t, but then once I used it...well needless to say for being an iApp I was very dissapointed. It has a long way to go before I will use that instead of AIM.
Problem:
? To get a buddies 'info' you have to access it from the buddy list, then you have to change the pulldown menu.
- With AIM you have multiple ways to 'get info'
? Organizationaly it sucks, no buddy groups?! If you want to remember or put the name of somone it gives them that name on your buddy list.
- With AIM you have those nice tabs when you get info to clearly view profiles.
? Most annoying thing is to read somones away message you must expand the buddy list!
- AIM...get info (again AIM has multiple ways, not just one like iChat, and there are nice organized tabs)
? iChat's message bubbles are nice but they just get plain annoying and you have to change hwo its viewed...i'm glad apple gave us a choice.
- I've always liked how AIM displayed information, never got confused on who was talking...although iChats different back colors helps alot.
?I like how quickly files are sent. (only other advantage is rendezvous)
I never thought I'd say it but this was a poorly thought up design by Apple with loss of features and VERY FEW advantages.
You can't group buddies in iChat, and AIM users can't see your text prefs (colors/font,) the onlytwo reasons why my sister won't switch from AIM to iChat. On the otherhand, I have no problems with not having those two features.

get a new sister.... just kidding Eugene, maybe just "delete" AIM by "acident" and then make a folder action script that will delete it if it is found in the Applications folder...heheheheheh
and AIM users can't see your text prefs (colors/font,)

Strange. I just tested that and was able to send text with custom fonts and colors just fine from iChat. The computer on the other end was a Mac with the official AIM client under OS9.
Just kidding, that is cool. Also, where do files goes after they are sent to you? Do you get a prompt?
No, my default font is Lucida Grande. I simply used skia in that example because I knew the other Mac had skia as well.
As for files, do you mean when you *receive* files in iChat? They appear inline with the chat as a document icon with the name next to it. Click it and it downloads to your computer. If the file is an image, the image itself appears in the chat.

Do you get a prompt (dialog) to where you can download the file once you click on it? Or, is it like Mail where you click on something and it downloads to somewhere odd!
Brad, what version of AIM is that? Buddy Icons have appeared at the top of the instant message for the longest time!

Ah, they appear at the top in AIM in X, but not for AIM in 9! That's the latest Mac OS 9 version available: 4.3.1232.
For reference, here is the same test sent to a Windows 2000 AIM client. That windows machine didn't have Skia or New York; so, I replaced them with Comic Sans MS and Times New Roman.
So, Eugene... show your sister this page and ask her if she's still sure about iChat not sending the fonts and colors.

Yes, it does that for me and others too.
Rumor that is definatly false:
-Apple made a piss port IM because AIM wouldn't run on 10.2
Though, I do suspect there will may be an update from AOL after 10.2 is "officially" released.
