What will be in AppleWorks 7?

Surpirsingly, the current version of AppleWorks for Mac OS X, sucks.

The things that we can probably look forward to are toolbars and better saving dialougs. Also, the font panel and the built-in Mac OS X spelling

what else are waiting for? <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

EDIT: Oops, put it in the X form instead of the Software....

Currently it's a bit of a nasty Carbon port, though it runs better on my 233MHz iMac than most other Carbon apps in X.

My wishlist is basically yours...as it is right now I prefer AppleWorks over Office anyway, so if it gets Native toolbars (I am an absolute whore for these) and AppleSpell I'm upgrading.

I think I'll still use Microsoft Word 5.1 for now. I have to open Classic, but it's super fast and not buggy at all. And it means I can make files that other Word users can read. Don't know about the other way around though.

AppleWorks is an insult to Apple's software engineers. I think it isn't even written on campus. isn't it sourced out somewhere?

It needs to be trashed and rewritten. Rewrite the whole thing. It's not that hard.

In all honesty, I think Apple should pay OmniGroup to write a replacement. I can see Omni really making a killer productivity sweet.

Need a solid word processer, solid drawing with more templates, spreadsheets and a much improved presentation module.

Apple can do it and they can make money off of it if it is a good solid product. People don't want to pay for Office. especially if there was an Office compatible suite that was full featured for an affordable price.

I agree with you Applenut. Apple needs to redesign and make a true professional application like Office X. I don't see why they haven't done some thing like this already. Apple Works is good to a point but it could be so much better!!! You know damn well if Apple did Design a professional level Office suite that every single Mac user would buy it over Office X.

Good Point Apple will get Mail up to par soon I bet. The new version that comes with 10.2 is much better than the previous. Give iChat and Mail a little more time, one thing about Apple they do stuff in steps unlike Microsoft were they make some thing and hope that it works with out any problems.

I am a true Appleworks fanatic. I have been using it forever. I love it despite its shortcomings, because of its strengths.

Here are somethings that definately need to show up for version 7.

    Spell and grammar check

Instead of half the draw panel being used for various basic shapes, it needs a basic shape button which you would click and hold to get access to all the basic shapes. Then more buttons can do things like 3d basic shapes (with full gradient shading)(Others can be text quote box shapes, etc)

    Spreadsheet needs tabs

It needs the ability to kern the text properly when the document size is at different magnifications.

It needs some templates for the presentation module.

It needs to go to Microsoft Word school of awesome table tools.

Needs Live Scrolling, I don't know why it doesn't scroll live, There's no problem with it, I downloaded a control panel on mac os 9 which forced all your scrollbars to be live, and appleworks was fine.

I think they should certainly make a big improvement and possibly a complete revision of AppleWorks, but the word processor shouldn't be made more like MS Word. I hate Word, the way it tries to do everything for you, even to the extent that it changes your capitalisation and sometimes even grammar, this wouldn't be quite so bad if it wasn't wrong every time.

Somebody asked about the history of Appleworks, and I know it was done by the same people who are now Gobe Software.

The most interesting things is that <a href="http://www.gobe.com"; target="_blank">Gobe Software</a> makes something now for the PC and Linux (Also formerly for BEos) called Gobe Productive which is basically their modern day version of Appleworks. I think it is going to be opensource soon. Maybe we will get Appleworks 7 a completely different way!

The only thing I can't stand is how reminecent of mac os 9 it is, all I can think about is learning how to use clarris works on a classic mac, in a stuffy room at school

Yeah, well, probably when Apple made it mac os X ready, they decided not to go and add all the niceties of X...such as font panel, services, spelling, colors, customizable toolbars....

    Right now, TextEdit is looking mighty fine <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

I do not like Apple works, it just isn't intuative. all I wanted to do was to write a letter and include a spread sheet in editable format. I was preparing a quotation for a client. I don't know if this is possible in AW, but I gave up and did it in Word, almost-easy. It was easy in 2001, but this is slightly broken in Office X, you can't change the number of visable cells in Office X

I get the feeling that Apple sees anything that's not "digital hub" as too 1990s to bother with much. Unfortunately I don't expect any great upgrades to AW.

That's one of the big strengths of Appleworks! Firstly, DON'T create a new spreadsheet document. When in your word processor, open the toolbox, and click the spreadsheet tool. Drag out a spreadsheet. Then add your data. (If you already have a spreadsheet you want to include, simply copy and paste instead.)

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple released a series of smaller apps that replaced the functionality of Appleworks. The "swiss army knife" approach isn't one that's favored by software people at Apple nowadays.

Anyway, some things I'd like to see in an AW 7 or its descendants are:

? PDF slideshows (including transitions) that can run on any computer with Acrobat or another PDF reader.

? Good support and contributions to Services (see things like <a href="http://home.arcor-online.de/grunenberg/mainmenu.html"; target="_blank">WordService and CalcService</a> for the gist).

? Document templates that fully support/enforce Chicago style and any others consistently. At least make the endnote/footnote features more robust.

? Make it more iApp aware for importing music, movies, pictures, etc.

    ? Better multi-page layout/browsing

i would like to see a better appleworks. i'd even take something done by the omnigroup. for now, though, i am using MS. i've tried appleworks a number of times and every time get fed up. the toolbar is hideous, the kerning of text atrocious, layout options too severely limited, and the lack of live scrolling simply 9ish.

seriously, why hasn't omnigroup come up with something? on a side note, how does bbedit fare? never been sure if it can handle footnotes.

    OpenDoc, anyone?

For those who never saw it, you opened an empty document, then dumped in whatever you wanted: video, text, pictures, spreadsheets, you name it , all driven by a suite of highly task-specific applications, which were only loaded as needed, whilst also giving something similar to M$'s OLE.

Given the recent revival of one old technology in the form of Inkwell, I can't help but wonder...

Not really OpenDoc, just more apps, and more specific ones. Like how iCal, iSync, and Address Book have much of the functionality of an Outlook type application. However I could imagine something like a spreadsheet table/function could be turned into a standard Cocoa class or a database that all apps can access like Address Book.

You get those things with Cocoa...not with Carbon (unless you actually code the exact same thing yourself, like Apple did (sorta) with toolbars and the Finder.)

It's not like you can just shove those on, you'd have to rewrite the entire app in Cocoa.

And just to throw this out there...I hate Carbon. Hate it hate it hate it.

I am officially a toolbar whore.
