Iphone upgrade to 16 Gig this year?

Any thoughts? I want one ASAP, but would rather have 16 Gig. If it's gonna be next year before it arrives, I'll get one tomorrow, but I was hoping for such an upgrade by November. They are making the 16Gig Itouch now, why can't they do the same for the iphone?

Any knowledge would be GREATLY appreciated!

My guess is you will not see one until mid 2008.

They might be out before the holidays, if not I'd say early 08.

You do realize that short of Steve Jobs opening an account on the AI Forums and posting the iPhone's long term game plan any answer you receive will be pure speculation at best. On the other-hand, If you're simply looking for an AI Forum members iPhone Guess Fest then that's exactly what you'll get....

Thank you so much for your candor, and probable harsh reality. I was hoping that someone would know something technical about size of new 16 gig vs 8 gig, how it would fit and why there isn't one even though there is a 16 gig iTouch.

    thanks!

You could get probably about 160gig's of flash or so into the iphone (I don't know the capabilities of the chipset to access that amount of memory) however it would be very cost inefficent. The flash memory in the iPhone isn't the most compact out there on the market, but it is still about mid-way on the size vs capacity vs price equasion.

Would you be willing to pay 800 dollars for a 32gig iPhone?? =) I wouldn't.

This post (as stated) is looking for knowledge and in my book that's a far cry from the speculation and guessing that makes up the vast majority of FH. Nothing wrong with FH but it's not a place to come for exacting / truthful / knowledgeable / etc... answers and nobody should be under the mistaken impression that it is.

Well that's a whole different ball game...

Size could be the issue... but then the iPod Touch has 16G .... but then again it doesn't have any cellular components... battery life could also be the issue .... does a 8G module draw less power than a 16G??? I dunno...

My best guess is that it's none of the above ... not so much as it is a decision handed down from the marketing arm of Apple.... After all, you can only differentiate iPhone v1.0 and v2.0 with a few things... storage being one of the big issues - sure they have GPS and 3G and a few other things but storage is one way to 're-invent' v2.0 in a cheap and easy way.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts. It seems to me that it is likely there will be a memory upgrade, and sooner than later. I have never believed that Apple or anyone else would hold back on making the phone more desirable for 'marketing' reasons. After all, companies like Nokia and Verizon are more of a threat than some arcane idea about why holding back a product would somehow create more demand.

And, by the way, I WOULD consider paying around $600 for a 16 gig (or certainly, 32GIG) phone. Everyone else was happy to pay that for 8 gig two months ago. 32 Gig would make that phone last for a long time.

    You're missing the point...

It's not "holding back a product would somehow create more demand" but it's.... If it sells just like it is then lets not rollout that 'whatever enhancement' (in this case more storage) until we have the next model ready and/or sales start to drop below our projections....

Unless that is they were to do the following...

    4GB iPod --- gone ---

    8GB iPod --- $399 ---

    16GB iPod --- $499 ---

Sure they could have done that (and I guess they still could) but it would have made more sense if they had done it when they dropped the price....

It's coming very very soon. If you don't mind paying $499 then definitely wait.

Yup Yup, I'm waiting too and from what I've gathered... I would say that a storage bump is eminent. Just take a loook at how often the iPod line-up gets a refresh. Every 270 days or so. The iPhone is due for a Feb./March update. Here's to hoping they have the battery life situated for 3G capabilities.

Whenever it comes, I doubt they'll raise the price.

They aren't raising the price, they'll keep the $399 8GB model around.

You know what I meant. It would be, in effect, a price increase.

I see no reason why they wouldn't follow their iPod model of increases in storage for the same price, and likely dropping the price of the 8GB model. If a 16 GB model had a price increase, it would need more (3G or whatever).

Personally, I think late February/early March is the earliest we'll see a capacity bump.

3G at the earliest in May, more likely September.

Wait to see if something is announced on thw 15th. If not and you have to have one buy the 8. If you can wait for the 16 then do so, but then wouldn't a 32 be supercool so you might as well forever because there will always be something better around the corner.

I'd say 16GB iPhone version is almost a certainty for 2008. It will probably be $499 though, and the 8GB will remain $399. Or MAYBE $350 and $450.

Yeah, but it's not a price increase like I said the price for the current one is staying the same. It's a bit like a 3.0 Audi going for $40,000, and then Audi brings out a 5.0 for $60,000. It's not a price increase if they keep the 3.0 around, it's a new model. So no, I wasn't being smart. I was simply stating the facts.
