Hi, and thanks for asking. We want to be able to detect and remove any viruses and/or whatever else might threaten the system's integrity. With Wanda, our ten-year-old PC, we used PC Door Guard, because it took up so little memory of the little she had left. We've heard that this sort of protection isn't as imperative with Macs as it is with PC-s; there was always something going funny with Wanda, and we would run the program and discover some nasty somewhere....
We just thought that someone with more experience might have a favorite means of dealing with whatever of this sort of thing there is to deal with these days (using only OS 9.x, not OS X - not yet, anyway).
Well, for OS9 I'd suggest McAfee's Virex or Norton AntiVirus. Though, I should make it clear that virusus are *very* few and far between on the Mac. In 18 years of Mac use and at least 10 years online, I've only had *one* virus and even it was of a completely non-damaging form with no payload (it was the D strand of the SevenDust virus, if anyone's interested).
When you're ready to switch over to Mac OS X, though, you'll be happy to learn that virus protection software is not necessary for it. Why? There simply are no known viruses for OSX! Really, none. Zero. Zilch. Nada!
Mac OS X also has a very fancy built-in firewall. Needless to say, I always recommend people to upgrade to X whenever possible, especially if they are concerned about security.
