What exactly do you want to monitor?

I dont want to monitor anything but my friend has these overprotective parents and the say they have some way of keeping track of his instant messages online. I was wondering if such a program existed.

    3 ways:

    1) Than can record everything he types with a simple program.

    2) I think there is also a way to intercept the packets of information between aim users and record them. Is there encryption in AIM? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

    3) Aim can also save a log of all the conversations that happened on his computer.

Ebby is right on all three parts.

You can install a "keystroke recorder" on the computer to monitor ALL text that's entered. These litttle apps have been around for many years on both PC and Classic Mac OS. I'm not sure if there is such software available yet for Mac OS X.

Packet interception is a bit trickier but is certainly possible. I doubt most parents would be saavy enough to even think of or know how to attempt this. I do believe encryption is possible in AIM (because I know I've seen the option in 3rd party clients) but I'm not sure how to enable it.

And, yes, AIM can be set to log all conversations to file. I always log my chats. I believe the latest "official" version for OSX lacks this ability, but the OS9 version does it and I believe most of the third-party clients can do it too.

iChat can auto-log all chat sessions, though they're in some format that iChat reads, rather than plain text.

So tell his parents to upgrade to 10.2 and they can do it that way. Of course, that doesn't prevent him from deleting the logs.

Really? Interesting. I've never had iChat crash. Not once.

Now, my menulets by the clock are another story...

It is most certainly possible on a switched LAN by a simple man in the middle attack. Ask my roomate. Chats are NOT encrypted, but they're not sent in clear text either.
