I guess we shouldn't expect AppleWorks 7.0

With the just announced discount on Office x for $199 w/purchase of any Mac, does that end the possibilty of AppleWorks 7.0 anytime soon?

Given this sale runs till the end of the year, Apple may not want to release AppleWorks 7 until MWSF.

Releasing it anytime sooner may just open a new round of accusations between MS and Apple.

Considering they've never given AppleWorks an overhaul since OS X was released (which it badly needs), I doubt we'll see an AppleWorks update ever. They're too focused on the iApps now it seems.

It's kinda funny, the 2 of the most important apps that I need (a cheap, great OS X word processor, and a really great X web browser), don't come bundled with my computer. A bunch of iApps which I hardly use, do.

You actually expected an AppleWorks 7 in the near future? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Steve has stated 1000+ times that he wants Apple to be responsible for the whole computing experience, OS, Hardware and Software. If they ditch AW the company has changed it's policy

Maybe the rumblings of Apple and Sun working on Star Office has some validity. I have a feeling that Apple wants to leverage open source resources to a fuller extent, but wants to wait on pissing of MS until their hardware situation is solved (which it will be soon).

I still say that AppleWorks is out because it simply doesn't follow Apple's philosophy of having separate apps for separate functions. for example, they could have tied iCal, Address Book, Mail and iSync into one big app like Outlook, but they chose to keep them distinct. I think apple won't create another AW but will recreate its functionality in other frameworks and applications.

That is a very reasonable way to put it. I think this thread can be closed now.

    regarding on iApps:

you´re right, an all-in-one-wonder is not Apple Style nowadays.

    BUT:

we do need a word-processor, a better one then AW.

some of us need a data-tank

no one needs a powerpoint thingy, ´cause iphoto, .mac etc. does better.-

    AND:

we do pay for an "update"; we do pay for QT (which is from my pov an application of the system); we do pay for .mac service.

    CONCLUSIO:

we will pay for iWord and iTank..

    I will.

    wait for januar...-

We need an enhanced TextEdit for word processing. Not much more. TextEdit can even import HTML!

Spreadsheets? I have yet to see a spreadsheet application that works as good as Excel does, sorry...

PowerPoint should be easy to recreate as an iApp. iPresent

I think Powerpoint functionality could be incorporated into any application via .pdf. That is, it would be nice if Apple could add the ability to export/print any document or album as a .pdf slideshow, including transitions, like what Photoshop Elements can do.

I also think that TextEdit could get a few more features and be a replacement word processor. Remember that Cocoa has what amounts to a word processor framework that is available to any application. I imagine that they could add some things ike word count, thesaurus, grammar services, some extra formatting options (columns, footnotes, headers), etc. as Cocoa classes too. Now just create a table or spreadhseet class, and you're all set.

Thats ausome!, and they could make it ten times better than powerpoint!

I could deal with a sorta crappy wordprocessor as long as it doesnt look like clarris works(brings back memories of sixth grade computer class on macclassics) If corel doesn't bring back wordperfect by my birthday in august, and apple doesn't have something better, i will buy word. . . . sadly, with tears in my eyes, cause i hate microsoft.

I downloaded the trial version of Office X and it really wasn't that bad. I would never buy it since I don't need it and don't feel like paying that amount of money for it, but Apple really does need to do something. I guess it's hard for them to do too much since MS might get pissed off if Apple made their WP suite too good. But MS is dumb for not lowering the price of Office, but still bitching that nobody is buying. Duh! <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

I will be astonished if Apple isn't working on AppleWorks 7, divided into two versions, Home and Pro. It'll have better compatibility with Office, and some enhanced features (esp. the Pro version).

Just because there's a deal with Microsoft for a discount on Office:mac doesn't mean Apple can drop the ball on this one. If Microsoft were to let Office:mac wither, Apple would be in dire straits. (I'm also not sure if people here are aware just how important AppleWorks is to Apple in the education market. It is. )

AppleWorks is both Apple's answer to a PC being bundled with MS Works... and a back-up plan.

I'd expect it AW7 some time in 2003...

That's interesting (and I do personally use TextEdit for word processing), but I think that vision is still some time away. (Three, five, ten years?) People expect an Office "suite" as a standard, and for many, many things, TextEdit is no match for MS Word.

The iApp philosophy isn't changing, but the suite concept isn't changing either. I'll bet anything AppleWorks is still very much being developed, and that considerable resources are being devoted to it.

Since when has any OS come bundled with a GREAT word processor?

And I'm sure when chimera reaches 1.0 or whatever it will start being bundled because it really is a great browser even in comparison to pc ie, only better cos it doesn't like sloppy html

How about the idea of MicrosoftWorks back on the Mac? MS Works for PC is an app I prefer to MS Office anytime. If they would do such a good job on it they did with Office X it would be the home office suit most people needs.

Maybe instead it will be iOffice and iWeb(or iBrowse)?

Major AppleWorks is due at the Frisko expo! That's according to Think Secret. Here's a <a href="http://www.thinksecret.com/news/appleworks.html"; target="_blank">Link</a>

The last I saw Microsoft Works, it was absolutely horrible.

I'm hoping for a major update to AW. I think its future lies in being broken into components and Services, but for now it's probably only(!) a ground-up rewrite.

The merger of Nisus and Okito Composer might yield an incredible word processor for professional use, as well.

I agree with your thoughts, Amorph, but it makes you wonder why they would (or so the rumor claims) go through the trouble of re-writing it only to replace it with frameworks and services later? I guess that kind of idea must be quite a ways away, if it's even being worked on at all.

Funny how what would piss MS off the most would be AW getting along with Office... full Office compatability. It would replace Office in many cases if it did that.
