Process MDS?

can someone tell me what that is? the pesky thing is eating up 70mb of ram constantly. is it a critical process? and if it isn't, is there way to knock it off?

    That's Spotlight. If you have external drives connected, you can drag them into the privacy section in the spotlight system prefs to stop them being indexed.
