Leopard hangs after some time, while Screen is off

I?ve installed Leopard on my macbook, upgrading from Tiger.

The installation process was swift and it completed with no errors or lags.

For some time, fresh Leopard was running terribly slow- just lagging. After three or four system restarts, everything started to run smoothly. No problems so far.

Soon after I?ve ralised, that I have a serious problem with my MacBook, hangin in some specific situation

The computer hangs always in the same situation: while on battery and with AC cord plugged in, I leave it for whole night, sometimes ever for more than twelve hours- downloading via azureus.

On ?better energy savings? mode the screen turns off after 2 or three minutes. The sleep indicator is glowing (not pulsing, as it does in the sleep mode)

And that?s ok.

But after some hours (with screen turned off and sleep indicator glowing constanly. I also hear the cooling fans) my MacBook totally stops respondig.

Pushing buttons, touching the pad, closing the case is not helping. Macbook is just dead.

Only thing I can do is to turn the computer off, by holding the power button?

I?ve formatted my hard drive and ?clean installed? leopard- but that didin?t helped a thing.

Useful information: while situation described above occures, the only soft running on my Mac OS is Azureus, Adium and skype. Net via wifi.

Leoaprd hangs, on screen turning off\t

This problem appeared after upgrading from my Tiger to Leopard:

It happens always at a specific situation:

I often leave my computer to download stuff via azureus.

With energy saving turned on and ac cable plugged in the screen shuts itself after few minutes. After that, if I leave my MacBook for couple of hours- it?s hanged.

Pressing buttons, closing the case- nothing helps. The computer is dead. The sleep indicator is on, but it glows continually (not like in the sleep mode, when its pulsating)

I thought applyaing a clean install of leaopard after erasing my hard drive would help, but it solved nothing.

Has happened on my mini, too. Frustrating, but I was thinking it was just me and my temperamental lil' box.

After tons of articles and forums, someone got an idead: "Try resetting your PRAM" (command+option+p+r on boot) but id didin't helped a thing.

Only thing i can thing of is... Update 10.5.1

From what i can see- if not only i get this kind of error- there is a slight chance, that apple will fix it with 10.5.1.

They say it's a matter of a few weeks. We'll have to hold on tight
  • Reply 4 of 19
10.5.1 might have a fix.. right now i'm just testing out not leaving adium open overnight...my computer would lock up about every 4 times i'd leave it alone...so far so good, but yea, i'll let you know if i luck

actually looking at your error log, it looks different than the one i've been getting..i'll know for sure next crash

I thought you guys were aware azureus is Java based, has memory leaks galore, and crashes periodically? The longer you run it (consecutively) the more certain it will eat all your memory and use 100% cpu.

Not bashing azureus here, I use it all the time, but this is not news. I often have to kill it.

tip: azureus' crash prone thread is called swt for some reason.

At one point I thought it could have been java, but then i just crashed without running it.. so looks like that options out

Well Guys, the 10.5.1 update has just arrived...

...And it didin't change a damn thing. I was suspicous as soon as i noticed that's it only 40 Megs...

Also, i found no information about mac crashing in the fixed bugs log http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306907

So... Once again- we have to wait for update. It's 10.5.2 this time, and i hope it will be a major fix, as i heard- 200 megs. Hope to see it before february...

Hey Guys! I have the exact same issue since upgrading to Leopard. With Tiger there was no issue at all with Azureus. I don't know what it is - maybe it is related to the AirPort drivers?

Folks - while waiting for a fix I am using transmission for the moment.

I’ve noticed yet another situation in which my mac book totally freezes…

After pressing the ‚three finger salute‘ (Control-Command-Power ) which should reset my computer, it freezes completely. It looks just the sime as it goes while the screen is off. The sleep indicator glows constanly, the screen is off- no matter what I press or do- macbook is not responding. Only thing I can do is to press power for 10 secs (hard turn off)

Do you think that SMC reset might help? Maybe that’s some other hope for resolving our problem?

    Resetting PRAM didn’t changed a damn thing…

But the good news for me is that i haven't crashed since installing 10.5.1, so everything is back to happy for me

    good luck guys

any fixes yet? after the patch, i seemed to not have any more problems, but about a week or so ago, i started to see the old problem come back..

anyhow, i also noticed DirectoryService spike up to like 195% some times....

    after digging, i found this:

maybe that's what happens when i'm afk?

I have had the same issue since updating my Macbook Pro (1st generation 1.83ghz) to Leopard and leaving it on all night while downloading with azureus. I found that by having it plugged in and setting the automatic screen shut-off to "3 hours", that I was able to download much more before it would hang up. Tonight I will try setting it to "never" and manually turn down the brightness. I also have smcFanControl running, boosting my fans RPM a little.

Thats actually how i have my macbook pro set up...with my monitor never shutting off, and manually dimming it.

i've noticed that lately its been much, much better than it was when i first started posting here, but it still happens (when this started, it would happen every other time i left it for any significant amount of time, now its maybe once a week)

Well, after month of steadyness, the error which we all are fighting with occurred.

So it seems that Transmission is not a perfect solution...

Moneydance is also a java-based program and I started having trouble with it crashing very frequently after upgrading.

I went to Applications > Utilities > Java and opened Java Preferences.

I set the Java Version to 5.0, but changed the search order for the Java Application Runtime Settings so that J2SE 1.4.2 is listed first, then J2SE 5.0.

Haven't had another crash of Moneydance since.

I don't know if it is related to the errors you are encountering, but is won't cost anything to try it out.
