10.2.2 isn't even out yet.

You need to specify what you're actually doing with your computer.

Well, at least some stuff everybody needs. Apple's own email application Mail is included in the OS, as is a browser (internet explorer), both of them do their job fairly well (although some, including myself, would actually recommend getting Chimera navigator for browser - it IS faster, even on dialup -> personal experience).

I wouldn't pick up virus protection (at least, I have none, and don't plan on buying some) because viruses for OS X are, what, scarce, non-existent. Moreover, you have a software firewall in OS X (even though, with dialup - and not a static IP - you don't really need it).

CD-burn software (which should actually be part of the OS): Toast (titanium preferrably) is a must-have.

A 'productivity suite': Appleworks (comes with the machine) or Office will do perfectly.

That 's the basics, more so since a decent music application (itunes), image management (iphoto), movie application (imovie) are included in the os.

I mean, for the rest, you should try and state, indeed, what it is you want to do, because everybody here has, I reckon, their boon software, which they would almost defend with their life. So, be a bit more specific.

Basically i will be using internet, photo storage and mild manipulation, word processing scanning pictures to post to online photo album, not too intense.

When will 10.2.2 be out and should i wait. i'm about to buy a digital camera canon s330 or Minolta dimage X, hope they come with support for 10.2

Will also buy new scanner (agfa doesn't support os10) probably canon lide 30 because my next new computer will be a notebook. will wait till march for notebook.

WHen i do get os 10 and digital camera want to go ahead and get the rest of the stuff you suggest.

I hear about iBrowse and chimera as being better than IE and Netscape (prefer netscape, it's that MS thing)

I don't know if you mean Agfa doesn't specifically support your scanner for OS X, but mine works just fine. I had to download Agfa Scanwise X, but that was it. I have an Agfa snapscan e20...
