Loving Opera!

I decided to give Opera a try. I am so tired of switching between anywhere from 2-5 different browsers. So I decided I had nothing to lose. Opera isn't that fastest, however, it displays all of the pages I've been to so far correctly, works great with Real Player and Quicktime 6, has tabbed browsing, it very stable, and does most everything I ask it to. I'm using a beta version (6.0b2) and it hasn't quit on me once. Mind you I've only been using it for three days...I'm sure something will turn up but I'm hoping it won't. It's also not the prettiest thing, but it's nicer than IE and has way more features than Chimera. If you want to try it go to: <a href="http://www.opera.com"; target="_blank">Opera</a>

Personally I fell in love with netscape 7. It does everything I ask it to and has tabbed browsing. Plus I get a multimillion dollar company backing it. Did I mention it is free for the final stable version????

NS7 is crap IMHO. The application itself is slow(when making new windows, new tabs, startup time etc.), it's difficult to highlight selected text in the address bar. And it's still mostly carbon. Like Chimera, only the UI is cocoa based, therefore it can't handle unicode.

I'm still in this 'never ending situation' of switching between browsers all the time and it's a no go situation really. Why can't we have a fast 'all Cocoa' browser. Hope the rumour mill is correct and Apple actually is working on one

Whether you think it is crap or not, there is no reason, that I aware of, for using Netscape 7 rather than Mozilla. Especially as Mozilla is going to be 1.2 by the end of the week and Netscape is based on Mozilla 1.01 (I think).

    Can anyone tell me otherwise?

Netscape 7 has a cocoa based front end?

No, the interface is built using XUL, a crossplatform gui toolkit that uses XML and javascript as core technologies. It was created by Dave Hyatt of Chimera, and now Apple, fame.

In fact discussion of the Carbon / Cocoa dichomoty makes even less sense for Mozilla/Netscape than it does for most other Mac apps. There is still talk about swapping out the Carbon/CFM based back end in favour of the Unix/Macho code to gain speed and stability but I've not heard much about that project since Pinkerton moved to the Chimera team. You can definately get nightly builds for it but it isn't as feature complete.

i still have yet to find anything that holds a candle to chimera. to me fast rendering is the most important, and it displays the pages i go to just fine.

i've tried the rest and found them seriously lacking.

(although i will say that i keep IE around for those pages that say they're IE only and won't let you continue otherwise)

I'm constantly switching. I was using Netscape 7 also...but now I'm using Opera. I'm sure by the end of the week I'll be back in another browser! <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

Just downloaded Opera last night and so far so good. At least it's faster than last time I tried it out. But sadly I can't use it on one of my regular sites which only works properly in IE and NS (uses java applet from where I can follow football scores as they happen)

Long time user of Internet Explorer. Never thought I'd ever switch. Tried Netscape 7, Chimera, iCab, Omniweb. They were ok. But when a friend showed me Opera, I was amazed. Have switched to Opera now. It makes my 500 mhz (66 mhz bus) iBook actually useable in OS X now. Would highly recommend Opera.

I'm using Mozilla, and God it is nice!

Have not used IE for about 3 weeks now and soon that will qualify it for REMOVAL FROM SYSTEM.

I tried Opera on my PC and it would not display my homepage properly, so I quit on it! Then I tried Mozilla on the PC and loved it, now it is in my new Mac and it is a breath of fresh air since IE SUCKED!

    Later

</strong><hr></blockquote> Just tried it meself and it's so much snappier than NS7. I actually kinda like it. Opera is fine too but I've trouble with the bookmarks. Every now and then they stop working and sometimes restart helps but not always. Then it seems to clear the history file at the same time and i have to write the whole address in the address bar instead of letting the browser auto complete them
