Why is Ipod so difficult to load music to?
I just brought a second hand iPod 30g. I liked the idea of showing my photos. I put 20 cd on from my machine in Belgium and came out to India where I live half the year.
I downloaded the huge itunes program to the pc. Here starts the problems.
There is a mountain of music on this machine which itunes collected. I connect the ipod and it wants to syncronise by removing all the stuff that already on it!
What use is that?
First question. How can I just add the music I want?
Next question. How do I add a selection of photos with out removing the music?
next question. How do I add music from other computers like my laptop?
next question. How do I back up the ipod on to a portable hard disk?
Last question. On the machine that I loaded the cds and synced the ipod.
itunes only shows the ipod contents in individual albums form. How do I see the whole collection?
Cheers Steve

I really find itunes most difficult.
For instance,
I go to music to select the tracks I want to transfer. There is a box in front of each name, this has a tick in it in every case. What does that mean? do I have to remove every tick and then tick the ones I want to transfer? There are only 9,000 plus music files on teh machine and I only want to transfer about 200 of them.
The photo section is particularly opaque.
Only the 'all photos (0 photos) option iis available. Clicking on 'Selected folders' has no result.
So still no futher forward as I am not going to try anything till I know what those ticks mean. The help section is spectacularly uninformative on just about all subjects.
Cheers Steve
The easiest way to choose which music to transfer is to create and sync specific playlists.
The photos should work if you just select the folder you want to sync. It's as straightforward as it could possibly be.
There's no reason to back up the ipod - everything on the ipod will be on your computer. Back up your computer's hard drive instead.
Transferring music from ipod to computer is technically not possible, because of DRM restrictions. But it is possible and very easy - you'll have to do a search on your own.
What I did is by opening a Load to iPod playlist. So whenever I want a song to be uploaded, I just drag it into my playlist until I need to recharge my iPod, only then I upload the songs from my playlist into my iPod. It might sound like a lot of work but believe me, it makes thing much easier.
Now for photos, choose manual again and select selected folder. Oh right, before you choose the folder make sure you create a folder to put all the pics you want to sync with into the folder. Later connect your iPod to iTunes and it will auto sync all the pics in that folder (it makes things much easier to handle since I got about 1k plus of photos in my hard disks, and not all I want it to be in my iPod).
Im still looking for a free backing up your iPod into a hard disk solution. So far I only find trials or pay softwares.
Hope this helps
