I am looking to buy an external hard drive for my mac book pro. any brand recommendations as far as compatibility or ease of use?
Build it yourself! External drive enclosures are easy to come by- I'd recommend the Antec MX-1, which is a bit pricey but very quiet. Add any SATA drive and you're set. Any online retailer will have a selection enclosures and drives.
I built a 320GB Seagate firewire drive with an Icy Dock enclosure from Newegg for about $160 with shipping. Of course the enclosure was expensive ($60), but it's well worth it. It has two FireWire 400 ports and one FireWire 800 port, plus a USB2 port if I ever have to use it. HD installation was a breeze (slot-loading mounting tray) and it's very quiet. I highly recommend building your own if you're up for it, but that's just from personal experience.

Nice firewire drive. If you don't need more than 120GB this is a good one. Really tiny.

I got a 250GB for $59.99 after a $20 rebate. I buy a lot of stuff at buy.com, they just seem to have the best deals.
On pixmania, I can get a 250GB Western digital passport ii with USB 2.0 for £69 or a 160GB for £48.
Does the fact that the GTech has firewire explain such a massive difference. If I have to boot using firewire I am up shit creek in any case!
