Naked mole Rat reports...

<a href="http://www.macedition.com/nmr/nmr_20021126.php"; target="_blank">Quark's president announces no OS X Quark improvements but gets in bed with dot net Microsoft initiiative.</a>

I know there are a lot of InDesign drum beaters on this board, and no offense, but unless you are a professional, career dtp designer, pre-press, mac head. Simply going to InDesign is not a smoothe thing to do .

You beat me by about two seconds with this thread.

So now what, wait for the Matsu and the other nay-sayers to pound the "Apple-is-doomed" drums?

Apple is royally screwed if this is true, and it probably is. Quark's head office has no real interest in maintaining their products for Macs even though a huge chunk of their customer base is on Macs. So maybe they're both screwed -- Apple and Quark. It wouldn't be all bad news in that case, would it?

    ARSE!!

I'm using Quark 4.11 (even though I have ver5) in Classic under X, it works just fine. At my company we would much rather jump to InDesign than switch to PC's

As far as I know, Quark still makes more from the Mac platform than Windoze. But I can imagine that they would love to have a bigger piece of Windoze pie..... However, Windoze users will not pay Quark prices though and prefer Adobe Pagemaker. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Quark is screwed. Adobe will murttleize them. i'm almost done with my final proposal for a complete switch to InDesign so we can finally move to OS X on our desktops. It will require hours of moving all our pages to inDesign templates but the translator is good enough that it will not require too much man hours. Much of it can be done with Applescript and some man hours will be needed to fine tune the files. Quark is really forcing our hand on this. They have no one else to blame but themselves.

If Apple can buy E-logic and all these other companies...

I wonder if they could purchase Quark outright and rename it to IPressPro or iQuark...

Then I guess they'd piss off Adobe eh?

Well time to brush off the inesign manual.

    Honest opinion here....

Is this a TRUE story? Do you really think Quark would abandon 2.5 million Mac Quark users worldwide?

They already have a carbon version running for over a year and half now. It most likely coming out of test stages. Remember the demo on stage at Macworld NY?

"July 18, 2001 - Quark Inc. today announced that QuarkXPress, the industry-leading page layout software, will be built natively for Mac OS X. Quark executives previewed the carbonized version of QuarkXPress, dubbed version 5.x, as part of Apple's keynote address today at Macworld Expo in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. "

are you kidding me? indesign is a vastly superior product, but for quark to make comments like "publishing is dead" is plainly suicide!

stick a fork in your quark, 'cause it's done and I'll tell you why. publishing will not die, it's evolving to use our latest and greatest technologies... why do you think id3 will incorporate so many features for electronic publishing? the formats may change from paper to e-paper and the like, but there will always be publishing in one form or another.

so what the hell's quarks business strategy here? if you ask me, they can alienate us mac users all they want, i for one will not touch that dinosaur with a 10-foot pole since i've been using indesign. does quark going to a pc only format make any sense? 90% of the graphics world is on mac, so who will their clientele be? "do it yourselfers" looking to save a couple of bucks and do their own graphics work? kind of reminds me of an absolutely horrible program called publisher (99% of plublisher jobs my company deals with have to be redone). besides, quark is too damn expensive for that group of potential customer. so where does quark go from here? straight in the dumpster and if you have any vested interests in quark, i suggest you unload them faster than the lifeboats off the titanic.

apparently the head of quark is just an idiot. When important people in companies make decisions based on power-trips rather than sound information, said business has problems.

The Quark prez seems to be in his own elitist techno-bubble...or was drugged by a Microshaft rep...his remarks don't astound me at all...he reflects the stubborn, pompous attitude Quark has had to clients and customers for the past 10 years.

.NET? Where will your documents be now? In your competition's lap, after they crack through the .NET and steal them.

Print is not dead. Quark is...plink, plink.

I took his advice to switch to InDesign... and have never looked back. It's a little slow, but I expect that will be fixed in the next version. Quark can spiral smoking into the ground as far as I am concerned.

our company is also converting all of our current Quark document templates to InDesign 2.0, and a TruEdit/InDesign workflow. It's painful, but Adobe has shown us they are forward-thinking, and Quark's shown us... well... NOTHING. we might have waited, but Quark's utter silence has been defeaning.

and, i'm sorry, but we can't trust that Quark's gonna do the right thing, after the shattering disappointment that version 5.0 has been. I'm sorry, but 4.11 still works just as well as 5 in classic, offers NO benefits to our layout house, so why bother? Quark charges full price for everything, and doesn't even include a user's guide in their upgrade -- though they now finally start offering it for free. what a deal!

all of our work on converting document templates should be completed by February at the absolute latest. and i will be a very happy guy that day. in the meantime, we are also looking to replace some aging computers with new ones before the end of the year to get the free InDesign copy deals, too (and still have machines that can boot into OS 9 if absolutely necessary, which, i don't care what anyone says, sometimes happens still).

i like quark, its a shame if they don't continue with OS X dev., they have a giant customer base, but they are loosing it everyday that they do not come out. I have tried indesign, and although it wasn't for more then 10min, i like the interface of express 4.x havn't tried 5 yet, assume its jsut as good. Perhaps I should give indesign a serious try, i learn it i can teach my mom who uses quark and is in desktop publishing

don't forget adobe is offering free indesign training at compusa. not sure of the quality level, but, hey, free is free. might be worth your time.

Anyone else think Fred Ebrahimi is pulling a negotiation tactic?

I don't know; I suppose it is possible Ebrahimi really loathes the Mac, is furious at Apple for dropping OS 9 for new machines come January, and is a complete hothead.

But Quark would lose so much of their business. It seems more likely he's trying to get Apple nervous and extort more technical and financial support from them for the QX6 port.

The question is, can they lose their Mac business and survive long enough for their .NET initiative to take hold? I think the answer is NO.

I have just switched from Quark to InDesign in the last couple of months, so I don't give a rat's @ss what Quark says or does. It just makes me laugh, now!

I'm right there with sizzle chest. I too have booted Quark from my life and use InDesign. Quark - as a company and XPress as a piece of software - can both go to hell.

They rape you on upgrades and general pricing. They are COMPLETE buttheads EVERY SINGLE TIME I've ever had to deal with them (tech issues, simple questions, upgrade, ordering, etc.).

Arrogant, one-trick ponies, IMO. Good riddance. Since I use Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, ATM Deluxe, etc., I was more than happy to give InDesign a try.

And guess what? It IS a better program. Actually feels like something created within the past 3-4 years, which is something I can't say for QuarkXPress.

If I never launch XPress again for the rest of my life, that'll be just fine with me. So clunky and dated. Nothing elegant about it, as far as I'm concerned.

I don't give two damns if they do anything for OS X. That little outburst by their chief hammerhead epitomizes their whole vibe. In 9-plus years of doing what I do for a living, I've NEVER had a good experience with the company itself. And everytime I used their software, I just sat there going "I wish somebody would create something better...".
