Lame question about charging iPods

While I'm deciding between buying the 160GB Classic or the 16GB Touch, a friend gave me an ex-girlfriend's 3rd gen iPod to use over Christmas. I need the power and sync cables so looking to get them secondhand. And here's the part where I got confused.

As far as I can tell, the 3rd gen iPod working with my non-FireWire PC cannot be powered through a USB port while syncing, ergo, it cannot be charged and synced simultaneously. The only chargers for this model are FireWire based. And based on what I've read online, seems as though iPods went from FireWire to FireWire/USB to USB and then back to FireWire/USB. So, should I just up and buy whatever accessories I need seeing as how I will need them with any current generation iPod, anyway? Anything wrong in this paragraph?

Thanks!
