How much coding practice do you think I'd need for Xcode? How difficult do you think it would be to add the "Ask for Finder Items" bit I mentioned above?

Right click on your folder of choice

    No need Xcode

Link dump here, I will check back this evening in several hours. This is fun stuff!

Just putting the links here before I forget.

It may take a few weeks, but looks like we're getting somewhere...

I've not really gone any further with this because I'm not really sure where to start. I've read nvidia2008's links but I'm not sure how to actually implement the shell commands as he's mentioned through Automator...

You can switch Cut on in the Finder

    From Terminal...

    defaults write com.apple.finder AllowCutForItems 1

    then relaunch Finder.

Unfortunately it's still half baked. It cuts items into Trash with no Paste facility. It's been available since somewhere through 10.4. I wonder when/if they'll finish it.

Yeah I know about this one, it's also available to switch on and off from software such as TinkerTool. However I don't call this "Cut"... It's terrible! What's the difference between that and command-backspace (move to Trash)? I can't see how Apple could call this "Cut" either, hence why I assume they have it switched off by default.

Not having Cut is only half the problem anyway (which in itself seems odd, considering they kinda invented the thing in the first place). Being able to move files and folders and have them merge has saved me literally hours, possibly days in the past at work. I have no idea how I'd do the same thing at home.

In fact, I still haven't been able to organise my work portfolio archive on the Mac, because I still need to find a way of dragging two near-identical folders together in order to merge the contents inside. I'm half tempted to burn the whole lot onto DVD, take them to work, reorganise them using XP then copy them back again. Considering OSX is supposed to be the most advanced operating system in the World, I find that pretty f*cked up.

IIRC Windows doesn't strictly do a merge keeping the newest version from both directories though, it just copies the source directory and contents into the target without emptying the target as Mac OS and OSX do.

If you really want to merge directories keeping the latest files from both directories, then use FileMerge (part of the Developer Tools package)

    See this hint...

Sorry, my mistake. I don't want to do a real merge, to be honest. I know there are tools out there, but I don't have any point at which I need to keep two folders in sync. Features such as iDisk and SVN do that nicely for me already.

My main problem is there is still no feature in OSX or utility written that allow a user to take two seemingly identical folders and merge them into one completely up-to-date folder. I'm surprised there are so few people who seem to need this.

The reason for it is in the past I burned off many backup CDs of work. Now I am trying to recompile them all nicely onto a few DVDs. Naturally there are a few different versions of the same projects. I would like to be able to take all the folders of the same project name I have and merge them into one folder with all the newest versions of those files. This I can do in a few seconds in Windows, but it seems to be beyond the capabilities of OSX.
