Okay i am a counter strike player and am awaiting my first ever mac to be delivered. I know that half life hasnt been ported to the mac so what i was wondering is does transgaming's WineX run in OSX?
wineX, from what i understand is not emulation. Actually WINE is an acronym that stands for "Wine is Not and Emulator." Thus, if you can get counter-strike to work, it might work okay. Please let us know how you do.
i looked around a little bit. you saw something saying you could compile Wine stuff on OS X? The only information i found indicated that you can't as of yet because of the PPC architecture...looks like some brainy developers are working on it though.
Counterstrike for PC was written and compiled for a PC though. For completely different hardware than a mac. I don't quite see how it is supposed to magically run on PowerPC hardware without emulation and at any acceptable speed to boot...
Yeah, WINE is only for the Intel architecture. It's not emulation; it uses Windows itself, after all. In order to run PC software on a Mac, there needs to be an emulation engine that converts code from x86 to PPC. The only game in town for running PC applications is VPC, and as others have said, you're not going to get any kind of performance out of it.
When Half-Life Mac was killed, so many of us were disappointed. You may want to try some of the contemporary games out there, including Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Medal of Honor. Those titles run natively on the Mac.
I'm a mac user...100% I'm about to get a g4 tower.
However, I keep a pc around the house for certain games. I'm not a big gamer, and all ym favorites(Warcraft 3, Unreal tournament...and I'm sure Moo3 will be great) are on mac...so I don't really need a pc(in fact its more my brother's than mine) at any rate, it is nice to have for hte occasional game that Is really cool and is not coming to mac.
however I heard that Half-life and counter-strike will finally make it to mac with the release of Half-life 2(which will also be on mac) so you never know you may end up getting your fix after all
ghost recon is great.
Urban ops(I think thats the Ut mod) is better than Counter -strike imo.
Half-life 2 on mac?? I don't think sierra is even making half-life 2, unless you mean team fortress 2. Anyway, if you want to play counter-strike, which I do daily, you'll have to have an extra pc around. Think of the pc more as a gaming machine than a working machine. The mac does not have any good enough emulators or whatever to run counter strike. If you do find some way to run it real well on a mac, please tell me!

That stuff you ask about, I don't know squat about it.
As a macuser, you'll know what I mean after a while...
