No defrag for OSX?

I've looked everywhere, and can't find any apps for defragmenting a hard drive under MacOS X?



Can anyone shed any light on this for me? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

    Norton Utilities has a defragger in its "Speed Disk" app. It's been native for OSX for over a year.



    Oh, and this belongs in the Software forum. Moving now...

    I presumed that it had some kind of 'active defrag' whereas it doesn't need it. Thoughts?

    I've never heard of such a thing.



    Mac OS X on HFS+ is just as prone to file and free space fragmentation as Mac OS 9 was.

    hfs+ is still prone to fragmentation

    hopefully they will junk it sometime in the future

    & stick with a good unix fs ufs or some form

    of jfs

    HFS+ suffers from ~15% max fragmentation.



    UFS suffers from negligable fragmentation.



    It's a good idea in windows to defrag, but it's not necessary in Mac OS 9/X.



    It should speed disk access up a bit (if you are using HFS+), but regular defrags are just annoying to do.

    Just to throw in my two cents...



    It's usually better to just backup your data, wipe the hard drive, and reinstall. Defragging isn't perfect, and takes up a good chunk of time anyway (if you haven't done it in a couple months).
