Ripping DVDs and Burning DVDs

I was wondering if I could rip DVDs on my iBook and if I could somehow rip only part of it, you know the beginning of Lost in Space, its so cool but the rest is so lame.

I also heard you can somehow burn DVDs on a CD but I wanted to know what format it has to be in, what software can change the format and what software can burn the movie on the Cd so I can watch it on my DVD player.

Quite long, thanks for the help

As in your other post, I think this time ripping and re-burning DVDS is illegal.

I want to go on vacation and see a few DVDs without having to bring the actual DVD which could break.

    Thanks,

You could rip the DVD to your HD (using ffMPEGx) and then convert the video to MPEG and burn it to a CD-R to make a VCD...Ripping the audio & video from the DVD to your HD doesn't take that long, but converting it to MPEG to view it as a VCD takes a very long time (I believe 10 minutes for every 1 MB of audio & video).

You can also use VLC to view the files ripped from the DVD with ffMPEGx, so in theory you could burn those files to a CD and use VLC to play them back...

you can make a backup of your DVD by copying it over to your harddrive. just drag & drop.

then, open DVD player, (in Mac OS X 10.2) click onto "File" and then onto "Open VIDEO_TS", then select that folder from the DVD you just made a backup from.

this is especially useful for people who make DVD's for a living. this way, they won't have to burn a DVD each time they want to preview it.

mods, I think this is not about pirating, it is more about safe holidays.

I don't know about his other other post(s), but once I bought a DVD, I can rip it, burn it, as much as I want for my own use!

In any case, I tried to copy a DVD to my HD once on my iBook. Took more than an hour. Same thing on PC using smartripper took <5 minutes.

I believe the DVD Backup is needed to break the CSS encryption if you want to transcode into another format like (S)VCD.

If you just want to watch it in the Apple DVD player then you can leave it encrypted as the program can (and does) descramble it on the fly, the same as it would from a physical DVD.

Ok so I need ffMPEGx to rip the DVD, and I suppose Toast to burn the mpeg2 as a VCD.

First is that correct and second what do I use to convert the file?

    How good is DVD backup?

    Thanks by the way

I just wanted to second that I think this is an excellent subject that I am very interested in--I would love to be able to take DVDs with me w/o worrying about the physical disk.

Hm, I thought 10.1 let you watch DVDs regardless of protection on the hard drive but 10.2 doesn't, no?

Let's say i burned a DVD over the summer and deleted the movie from my computer. Now i want to make a copy of it to give to my friends, does the OS and iDVD allow me to copy DVD's that i made using iMovie and iDVD? If so how would i do it?

as an extension of this question...

what about individual movies from a DVD? like lets say i have 4 videos on a DVD and i want to "rip" one of them so i can send it to a friend over the internet...

    possible

also: what about VCDs... would they be any different?
