I see what you mean, my bad. I had in mind the 3 GHz parts for which Apple apparently waited.
No one says otherwise. Even if the addition of the 4 x 2 option was perceived as a refresh, that does not means that the Mac Pro should not be updated before the end of 2007.
I agree, in the original post of yours that I responded to you made it sound as if they didn't need to as there was nothing new available.
It doesn't make sense that Apple won't even refresh cards in between long updates like this.
In a first view, yes, it is unbelievable to keep for so long the same graphics card when this industry is galloping. On the other hand I wonder if there is something to hold Apple back. EFI probably? I don't know.
But whatever the case, you always need drivers for the graphics cards and the situation does not seem to have changed at all from the PPC era in this respect. Or it got probably worse; I don't remember in the past one year and a half with the same graphics in the Power Mac.

Just think about it, their grand public machine has integrated Intel craphics.

Sorry about that. I realize that by insisting to call the addition of the 4 x 2 option a "refresh" I am stretching it a bit, but in no case I mean that Apple has anymore the luxury to wait.
My opinion is that Apple should have new machines to go by the time new processors start flowing in the market. Many even do pre-announce new computers based on new Intel technology. It makes part of the game and creates a bad image for Apple. But it is clear that Apple has its eyes elsewhere. No wonder why the "Computers" disappeared from the company name.

I think we should see a refresh. The real question is whether or not Apple plans to go with the 1600Mhz FBS chips and if the non-availability of those chips on the market is due to Apple having bought them all up. Dell doesn't even have them, they ended up removing the option from their T7400 configuration page.

Only a few more days now...
And it's that fact that Apple bought all those processors, so long ago, that I can't believe people don't think there is Mac Pro waiting to be released. It should have been ready a long while ago, but after those processors came out I insisted that Apple was waiting on other technology, and it would take until MacWorld for them to be ready. Everybody thought I was crazy.

I'm curious, onlooker, what do you think took so long? Specifically what tech?
Things that come to my mind are;
graphic cards, of course, everyone's favorite
eSATA, a possibility, but wouldn't have caused a delay--at least as I undestand it
support for the new firewire standard--but it isn't finished is it?
adequate supply of new RAM chips, this is a strong contender in my book
adding integrated RAID on the motherboard, it really isn't that hard, so it shouldn't have caused a delay
general persnickety-ness, my personal favorite reason for the delay
I wont say because it's a hunch, but we should see it. It has to do with an acquisition and a new Apple product that I think will be introduced with the Mac Pro. Now you wait for MWSF. If they don't introduce it I will tell then.

Now you have piqued my curiosity. Based on your description I think I will go a-googlin' to see what I can see.
There is an article up over at CNet (link) that states:
Intel is closing in on shipment totals of 1 million 45-nanometer chips after launching its first such processors last November.
So I started looking around to see what is going on with the "1 million 45-nanometer chips" out there in the wild. At Dell it says that the processors will be available in Jan 2008. And I couldn't find anything on the HP website other than an Intel roadmap.
So where are these Penryns hanging out these days? Certainly they are not all in an Apple warehouse getting tans before appearing in new Mac Pros at an Apple Store near you in approximately 8 days.
Yes. My thoughts were something along the lines of an Apple reinvented version of the gesture pad to replace the mouse.

Apple did buy all the first round processors from intel. I don't know if it is a xxx_million, but if some are going into Xserves they may already have a buyer in Disney/Pixar.

I expect that the FSB is going to differentiate their entry level (2.5, 2.83, 3.0) and really expensive (3.0 1600, 3.2 1600) machines along with different graphics cards and HDs.

onlooker how do you know that? I remember reading the rumors, but I never saw any follow-up. I hope you are right because it would mean that we are definitely going to see some new Mac Pros ASANW (as soon as next week).
I'm going to wait for a new display before buying. I can't see myself getting stuck with one a week before new ones are announced.
I wrote in another thread that I am also waiting for 8 days to see if there will be new ACDs. Seven days until the keynote and then the supposed surprise at the Final Cut meeting the day after.
But I am definitely buying a new Mac Pro before the end of the next week.
Didn't get everything I wanted, but it is a significant enough upgrade to make buying a used or refurbed box out of the question for me.
This is a good update. Just wished Apple would open their hands and give 4 gig standard RAM amd at least 500gig HD. For a Pro machine is not asking too much.
Besides that, I am waiting MWSF before place an order, but I feel unfortunately is very unlikely to have new displays now. Maybe down the road at WWDC.

If the previous rumor holds true that Apple was buying up all the Harpertowns: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles..._mac_pros.html

Yes, I guess this should now be moved to the CURRENT HARDWARE forum.
Thank you Apple.
