Apple TV dumb question

I have a dumb question about Apple TV. Do you need a wireless network in place first to use it? I would guess you would since it does not connect to your cable modem. So this means you'd need to buy a base station and Apple TV? Thanks.

    No, you can use a wired network. But it does need to be able to see the internet and be on your LAN in order to be fully operational.
