When is the NEW iMac coming?

It's been over 160 days since the last update... when will we see the next set of processor bumps/ graphics cards?

I am looking to make a purchase, but don't want to do it a week before the update comes! Any help you could offer would be most helpful!

Hey, I waited 8 months for a new iMac and it arrived almost a year after the previous models. The usual advice: if you need it, buy it! I am too lazy to search for hints from the Intel's roadmap but I thing nothing is coming till mid year. The design is pretty new so I don't expect surprises there.

While I appreciate your advice of 'buying when you need it', the rest of your comment is not necessarily accurate.

Intel released 'penryn' (the next series of iMac/MacbookPro processors) at CES about 1 week before Macworld started. The processor has ALREADY been released.

The remaining question is IF and WHEN Apple decides to grace the iMac with Penryn. I was hoping someone would have some advice on the topic or an idea of when it may happen.

Anyone got any informed ideas of when Intel will have a quad-core processor suitable for the iMac form-factor? I gather that the Penryn family, which has just been released, will soon include a quad-core processor targeted at desktop-replacement notebooks and I figure Apple could drop that in an iMac.

I'm aiming to buy a 24" iMac in the next 2-3 months, but would hang on a bit longer than that if there was a real likelihood of a quad-core.

From what I remember, before the end of this year. So, in around a year from now, the iMac will hopefully have 4 cores thumping inside.

Intel announced a mobile quad-core for Q3 (july-sept) 2008. Add a few weeks for an Apple release.

Speed is yet to be revealed, but MY guess (according to the other models being released at that time) would be 2.53GHz.

This cpu will not be cheap (expect $999 or higher each if you buy them by 1,000). More expensive than the current 2.8GHz option on the 24" iMac. It will also be hot (45W TDP).

Since Apple is already using 44W cpus in the iMac, I guess they can put the upcoming mobile quad in a future 24" iMac. Can they put it elsewhere? What about the 17" MBP or even the 20" iMac?

Next wave (may-sept 2008) of mobile penryn chips (from Reg Harware):

Core 2 Extreme X9300 - 12MB of L2, core speed unknown, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 45W ???? this should be the quad, for the 24" iMac

    Core 2 Extreme X9100 - 6MB of L2, 3.06GHz, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 44W, for the 24" iMac

    Core 2 Duo T9600 - 6MB of L2, 2.80GHz, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 35W, for MBP, iMacs

    Core 2 Duo T9400 - 6MB of L2, 2.53GHz, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 35W, for MBP, iMacs

    Core 2 Duo P9500 - 6MB of L2, 2.53GHz, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 25W ???? made from two of these

    Core 2 Duo P8600 - 3MB of L2, 2.40GHz, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 25W, for MacBooks, Mac mini

    Core 2 Duo P8400 - 3MB of L2, 2.26GHz, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 25W, for MacBooks, Mac mini

Core 2 Duo SP9400 - 6MB of L2, 2.40GHz, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 25W, or those for a smaller Mac nano or iMac Air***

Core 2 Duo SP9300 - 6MB of L2, 2.26GHz, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 25W, or those for a smaller Mac nano or iMac Air***

    Core 2 Duo SL9400 - 6MB of L2, 1.86GHz, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 17W, for MBAir refresh

    Core 2 Duo SL9300 - 6MB of L2, 1.60GHz, FSB 1066MHz, TDP 17W, for MBAir refresh

    Core 2 Duo SU9400 - 3MB of L2, 1.40GHz, FSB 800MHz, TDP 10W

    Core 2 Duo SU9300 - 3MB of L2, 1.20GHz, FSB 800MHz, TDP 10W

    Core 2 Duo U3300 - 3MB of L2, 1.20GHz, FSB 800MHz, TDP 5.5W

    Celeron 723 - 1MB of L2, 1.2GHz, FSB 800MHz, TDP 10W

***iMac Air= speculation of a tiny/thin/smaller iMac based on the MB AIr "electronics": just a thin (notebook-type) small display, with Air electronics and a harddrive, very few ports. 0.76" thin. 13-17" display, to replace the Mac mini and the defunt 17" iMac. More details as soon as I figure them out.

Everybody and their sister is asking for penryn MBP/iMacs/MBs now, but I prefer to wait for the second wave of penryns and their associated chipsets (montevina family).

Thanks for the info! Very intersting...

Now, in your professional opinion, when do you think the FIRST penryns will be put in to the current iMacs? One week? Two? Several months.

I am very interested in what you think.

why would you replace the mac mini with something that has a display built in?

    I wish I knew.

But, IMO, if a 1st gen penryn, it could be just after the MBP gets it (anywhere between next week to late feb). If it's a 2nd gen penryn, anywhere between june and july.

    QFT

I would think another Reason of the MBP not being updated yet is because...(this is just opinion)

the manufacturing plant has to be readied to build the new line. If the new MBP's are being made as we speak. I would guess apple is waiting for the "Stock" level of the older MBP to become lower..

because there are people blindly buying the MBP without even knowing its on the brink of an update.

so when the "Stocks" of the MBP become low enough then the New MBP will be announced. IMO

    but i agree with "mjteix"

    for his above post.

    Ah... I see.

I was planning on making a purchase no later than late February, but could use it now. It makes it kind of tough, because I could really use the computer for the next month, but on the other hand... If I get it, it will probably get updated a week later!

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Don't be sad. If you don't need it right now, just wait a little.

There's is also Apple's quarterly financial report next week, sometimes it triggers something!!!

I expect the iMac will get the Penryn processors about a month after the MacBook Pro gets them, and if people want a quad-core iMac, they will have to wait until the iMac moves to the Montevina platform.

What about the macbooks????? They just got the santa rosa chipset. but are they gonna get a redesign to get on track with the whole aluminum shell apple is going for to be eco friendly???

But, in your gut, do you think it will?

I don't NEED it today, but I don't think I can go a month without it. It might come in 2 weeks, or it might come in 3 months... doesn't seem like anybody really has even a very educated guess at this point!

I think I might as well just make the order.

mjteix ... outstanding, thanks for that info. I don't think I can hold off buying until the end of the year. Pity, a quad-core iMac would really do the business for me.
