We both got Ipods for christmas and then decided to consolidate all our music onto one external hard drive on our home server that way we could both get to the folder on our laptops.

So I did hours and hours of consolidating files and I mean HOURS! So I fire up iTunes and what does that bastard program do? It lists everything in our library in triplicate on three different dates!!

I don't know how to reset iTunes so that we have one listing of all entries.

Can someone help me before I put this beautiful red ipod on Ebay for sale?

Thanks

Make sure all the actual music files are in a safe place (in other words, don't delete them.) then go into Music-iTunes folder and delete the iTunes Library file and the iTunes Music Library.xml.

Now you'll have to re-import all that music into iTunes, but that's a simple drag-and drop procedure (go eat dinner while it processes things).

*** You WILL also lose all your playlists/ratings/playcounts/etc.***

You might also try JUST deleting the .xml file first then restarting iTunes. Someone else might have a less "drastic" approach, but that'd fix the problem anyhow.

Make sure you have the "copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library" option deselected.
