You can get quicktime codecs that allow for Ogg Vorbis decoding, and then iTunes should be able to playback Oggs. But there is no official support yet, and no encoding.
shn is shorten, it is an awesome format, but dont remember if it is playable by itunes or not, its alot smaller then wav but is about the same quality, alot better then mp3
Funny that the shorten format should pop up. I was just looking at the new website Phish is using to distribute soundboard recordings of their recent shows <a href="http://www.livephish.com"; target="_blank">(link)</a>. They use 128 kbps mp3 and shorten as distribution formats. I did some digging, and apparently shorten is a lossless, open source audio format. You can get a little freeware app called <a href="http://www.hornig.net/shorten/"; target="_blank">Shorten for Macintosh</a> which apparently can convert shorten to .wav or .aiff. Hope thats of help!

Yes and no.
It doesn't support anything other than mp3, aiff and wav in the sense that it will track all the metadata and normalise the sound levels and all that other stuff.
It will play almost anything through Quicktime with minimal feature support.
Currently you can get a quicktime component for ogg vorbis, but shn is only sort-of open source so I don't expect anything to happen in that direction.
A great site to find out more about .shn and especially their software that shares legal live music and video only. Their <a href="http://www.furthurnet.org/downloadarea/"; target="_blank">software</a> for it is available for OS X.
Highly recommend them...got gigabytes of rare music and concerts.

Download the Ogg Vorbis decoder plugin for Quicktime at
<a href="http://illadvised.com/~jordy/"; target="_blank">http://illadvised.com/~jordy/</a>;
Oggs then work fine in iTunes.
