side note: what's the design job market like in KC? my wife is from there and wouldn't to terribly mind moving back. this tends to change from time to time depending on how much time she spends around her mother.

There are a lot of publishing, marketing, design, advertising and communications companies here in the KC area. I am a network admin for a publishing company in the 'burbs. Hallmark, Sprint, Bayer and other big companies also have headquarters or divisions here. I like it. Pretty cheap to live really, and good incomes too. There are about 2 million (!) people in the metro area. More than people expect. Nobody rides horses or chews on straw either. We may get a light rail system in the coming years. It's actually a pretty cool city with lots of schools, art, music, film, cafes, shops and sports. No hockey team though...grrrr!

seeing how my wife has most of her family in KC, i've actually spent quite a bit of time there over the last 7 years or so, just never thought to seriously at moving before until now. in fact we got married down by the plaza. very cool town.
just curious as to the state of "design" (print or web) job market. are people hiring? where would one look?
my opinion is that QUARK 6 or, more exactly, the lack of it
is going to COST Quark their position as the de facto standard in publishing.
i'm biased. i have always hated the look and feel of Quark.
i've also long been a proponent of a tailored immersive multimedia computing environment that erased the boundaries between applications.
for me, Quark has always represented the antithesis of that.</strong><hr></blockquote>
don't kid yourself, as much as many of us in the design/publishing industry hate quark for some reason or another, they are not going away anytime soon. to many designers and shops depend heavily on their software. there is no doubt that they are losing some ground to indesign, but they will remain the dominant force for some years to come.
<strong>Apple has pissed off Adobe quite a bit lately and could not buy Quark without jeopardizing their strategic relationship...
unless of course Adobe suddenly NEEDS Apple for a change and would be willing to overlook even something as big as the purchase of Quark.
</strong><hr></blockquote>
Ahh.. but how about this?
What if Apple bought Quark and then made some deal w/ Adobe that would include the death of Xpress in exchange for some Adobe technologies... perhaps to "spruce" up the iLife even a little more?
The Reason Apple wouldn't buy Quark or XPress is that they could probably be at 80% of where Quark is now in a matter of weeks with Cocoa's pre-built objects and libraries. In other words, I think they would be buying more work than would be worth the outrageous price Ebrahimi would inevitably throw at them. XPress must be a monster to Carbonize. I would want nothing to do with it if I had a choice. (Quark still holds rights to some other inteteresting applications, but they might be too old to be useful.)

I don't disagree with you at all.... I was entertaining the notion of them buying Quark just to kill XPress and force everyone to switch to InDesign. (Of course, this would anger many users so it is still not a good idea).
Mac Only? I don't think that would make a big deal. I have a reasonable amount of publishing experience, and when we changed to macs, the publishers seemed much happier. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think most people who use Quark use macs.
Apple shouldn't buy Quark. Adobe should though. They could sell Quark along side InDesign and transfer the Quark features most wanted to InDesign in the mean time. With Quark source code they would be able to create seamless and perfect quark conversion tools. It's not like when Adobe bought Aldus; people will be happy that Quark was dissolved.

We just got the proofs back for our CD cover/booklet design. They were done in QXP 3.3 on a PC!
Needless to say, there are color issues, some of which are baffling to us.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Regardless of Mac or PC, the thing that strikes me is that so many are still using versions 3.32 or 4.1.
To be totally honest, if they made v4.1 available on OSX, that would be just fine. It just works (for me) and really, how much more do you really need or can cram into a page layout program.
Besides many upgrades simply just bloat a program.

<strong>Any ideas on how much Quark Xpress 6.0 will cost?
Is there a ship date?</strong><hr></blockquote>
my guess is it will be about the same as it has been for a while. here's the current pricing...
$899 for full version
$279 for upgrade from 5
$379 for upgrade from 4

what if Apple bought Quark !?!
scenario:
in the land of make-believe and rumors
Microsoft has been said to be considering buying Macromedia.
Apple has pissed off Adobe quite a bit lately and could not buy Quark without jeopardizing their strategic relationship...
unless of course Adobe suddenly NEEDS Apple for a change and would be willing to overlook even something as big as the purchase of Quark.
yes, i'm sorry for going so far off topic.

I was just joking around....
it would satisfy it's mea culpa to Adobe by making Quark Express mac ONLY !
Adobe would accept that trade off without cutting off Apple's Oxygen supply of Photoshop and PDF.
i thought so too but the nubers being touted currently are 50-50 split; PC - MAC users of Quark.
i wonder why Adobe hasn't bought Quark. they would have a totally monopoly on DTP.
btw, i think the only reason Microsoft hasn't bought Macromedia already is that sigificant litigation has not been finalized yet.
it would be a terrible tragedy if Microsoft bought Macromedia but that would have some interesting side effects too.

I would search the web for KC jobs.

Quark, Inc is not for sale.
Quark, Inc is a private company.

I for one would cry...
That would be one of the WORST things that would happen to web design on the mac.
