    for your mac or peecee?

i forgot where the mac beoses were - i'll try to have a look.

for the peecee beos, look at <a href="http://www.download.com.com"; target="_blank">www.download.com.com</a> [yes, with 2 .coms], at least that version was there.

According to what I remember reading on Be's website a while back, if your machine uses a mother board older than the one which shipped with 96/8600's, you're out of luck. The problem came from Apple not providing Be the information needed to get the OS to boot or something like that.

Be's website is at <a href="http://www.beincorporated.com/"; target="_blank">http://www.beincorporated.com/</a>, but it is no longer much help though since it appears they are shutting down they're operations.

    older? no... newer yes.

be supports most PCI based Macs that are not g3/g4.

i am an avid beos user/fan. I run it on my Performa 6360 and PowerMac 9500/180MP. On the dual machine its awesome. On the Performa its a miracle over Mac OS.

just a really fast operating system.

BeOS for PPC is not free. Only BeOS 5 Pro supports PPC. BeOS Personal edition was only X86.

despite that, you can probably find pro for cheap on ebay or something.

is it worth it? depends..... BeOS itself has little software.... PPC due to lack of support and popularity has even less. It's certainly usable and brings new life to old machines based on what you want to do with it. The PPC only has one web browser choice.... NetPositive which came with it. It's about on line with netscape 3 or so which in other words means it sucks.

but Gove Productive is awesome and if you need basic web browsing a nice office suit and some other media things (MP3, TV tuner, even 3ivx) then it mahy be good for you.

BeOS / PPC comes (came) with a boot manager to switch between MacOS Classic and BeOS.

BeOS / PPC runs on any 603 or 604 starting at (IIRC) 180 MHz. BeOS / PPC does not run on G3s, as Gassee claimed Apple wouldn't reveal G3 specs (yeah right, that's why Linux and *BSD run fine on G3s without any relations to Apple employees ).

BeOS is nice as an "ooh, it's fast!" OS, it's nice as an "ooh, implementing Metadata could work a lot better than in BeOS " OS. And it's even nice as an "ooh, how utterly useless!" OS.

Gassee calimed that but it was just a smaller part of a much bigger problem. Be was trying to sell a commercial OS that would run on Macs. The machines that Be supported had "full support", were tested, had tech support, everything. Be could not continue support of the Mac platforma selling a commercial OS for it, when Apple refused to offer them necessary technical information for the machines. Which is why portables were never supported. Be had portable support nearly done and then Apple stopped working with Be. Now, cant really blame Apple, they had just bought NeXT and Be was now competition but his claims are valid. And im not even sure if they could be considered competition since a BeOS sale needs a Mac sale in the first place.

so what would you do? continue spending resources on a platform where the company that controls that platform just bought a company instead of you, stopped supplying information to you, and is against you......... or port it over to X86.

unfortunately porting to X86 took too much time and resources and Be was never able to gain ground.

ive never been able to make a successful BeOS disk image... not sure why.... i think it has something to do with the partitioning since its hybrid

I'm one of those people who was disappointed that Apple bought NeXT instead of Be. I had used BeOS 4 & 5 on my Powermac 7500 for quite some time. While not polished, it was a great improvement to OS 9 at the time.

Ah well. Jaguar is keeping me happy for now.
