That may not be the only update that happens today. I am trying not to get my hopes up, but if Apple were going to have a special apple event to announce the new Macbook Pro (which I think they will, whenever it comes) it would not have happened yet. It's only 7:15AM in Cupertino, and I don't think they would have asked the press to be there quite that early.

Here's hoping it still happens today!

Well, at least it was when they had the white poly-carbonate plastic, and a friend of mine is still employed at this same shop and says that the new model is just as bad. Many of the parts just snap off and on, and it would be very easy for a consumer to ruin the case.

As to the confidential info, none of the tech's give a crap about what porn you prefer to look at, but if you are among the few, the proud, the extremely paranoid, I have a suggestion.

Create an Admin account on the machine, complete with password, and then never use it.

Be sure to remember the password for this admin account so that you can provide it to the tech and they have full admin rights without being able to view your personal stuff.

Apple had a previous iMac design that allowed users to mess with too much of the internals, so now they've locked up the entire machine. When even Gateway can design a decent AIO machine that has a user-replaceable hard drive, it shows Apple isn't even trying.

To me, access to RAM and the HD should be a core feature of every machine. These are commodity items that are known to need adjusting over the life of the machine. To prevent this is like buying a Chrysler with the hood bolted down and serviceable only by the dealer. That the Mac community stands for nonsense like this is what makes us look like a bunch of fanboys.

With regard to the confidential data, I was thinking more along the lines of small business accounting data and customer ID and credit card data. Even small businesses in Canada have to take reasonable action to protect client data, and handing your whole machine for days to an outside source would certainly qualify as being extremely negligent.

If Apple were having a press event today, we'd have heard about it ages ago. The invites would have been sent out between one and two weeks in advance and would have been publicised when received (like this).

Data like that should be either encrypted or on an external disk - preferably a network device. This is correct for all business data, even for a small business. You never let this kind of information out of the company, even if it's a trusted technician.

For credit card data there's the whole CPI standards that you must adhere to in order for the CC vendors to allow you to accept the card. Giving number lists to computer techs ain't it.

Exactly. But at the office, having the data inside the computer is much more secure than leaving a small Firewire drive on a desk (especially if the computer itself is secured to the desk.)

So it makes sense to be able to remove the hard drive if the computer requires outside service.

the 17" is a better display for graphic and design work, and games etc as it has the same resolution has a 24" monitor. But it is alot bigger and a bit heavier, so most does suffer from some portability issues, but if you need the bigger screen and can afford the extra cash, go for the bigger screen! Im buying my MBP for graphic and design work but im opting for the glossy 15" as I am going to be taking it to uni and back each week.

Im in a similar position to you at the moment, but I dont know if I can wait for an update with no confirmed date, we could be waiting a month or two for a speculated date then to find that there is no update again . . . im seriously considering getting the current model and selling it when a decent update finally surfaces!

Just to add here: I have just been to an Apple store in the UK and was told by one of the workers, who turned out to be the store manager person, that they have ahd absolutely no clues as to when/even whether there is going to be a new version out. Obviously they get told nothing fro apple but sometimes they know slightly in advance, but then again these guys are sales men so I always take what they say with a pinch of salt! I also found out that on a MBP the in-store Higher ed discount in the UK is 15%. So I may well get myself one after new york!

I hope your a patient person Milo!

How long does it take normally for the new MBP to show up in the store from when they are shown to the press? It seemed like it took the MBA about 2-3 weeks for it to show up in the Apple Store. I need to pick up a MBP by the middle of April before I start traveling for work.

Is there some sort of swing discount? Say if I swing someone over from a PC to Mac, I get a discount when I by my new mbp? I've swung my whole family, my fiancee, her hugely pc centric dad, my cousin, 2 of my roomates in college and my keyboard player..

I should get a free iPhone for that kind of business.

Last update (Santa Rosa) was Tuesday, June 5, 2007. Availability same day as announcement. I read about it in the morning, went to the Apple Store and was using mine before lunch.

Just out of curosity, how does the launch of an update usually occur, does the website just get updated one morning and then the new mac/product is availiable with no real launch party or anything like that????

I has happened before - notice the iPod Touch and iPhone got updated without any big hootenany.
  • Reply 113 of 114
For the minor updates, not a new product intro, a press release goes out that the product has been updated and is available in stores and online. Santa Rosa update involved no advance notice. You find out about it in the news, usually online at a spot like AppleInsider.

The press release includes full details on the upgrade.
