So when does Safari become non-beta?

I'm sure they're busy addressing all the bugs but did Apple give a time frame when Safari will be finished?

I would guess it'll ship by June, when the Beta expires.

Other than that, I'd imagine that they're taking a page from id software and saying that it'll be done when it's done.

Judging from how long iSync takes to become 1.0, Safari will probably take about another four to five months.

I'm just hoping for an update, a Beta 3 version. As much as I like it I have to admit it's a long way off becoming 1.0. However, OsX was released as 1.0 when still in Beta state really so who knows

Personally, I hope that Apple takes their time releasing Safari. It's got potential, but it's a way off from being a finished product.

I trust Apple will do a reasonably good job of working out the bugs (Well, except for the Java bugs. I'm cynical about those. One Mac browser after another after another has had bad Java applet support -- why should Safari be any different?), but what I'm not sure about when I look at Safari in it's current state is where the feature set will go. Beta is not the time to be adding features, so I think when 1.0 is finally released, I'll have to wait until 1.1 or 2.0 to see Safari's feature set expand.

At present, Safari is a very "lite" browser. That might be fine for many users, but I'll probably stick with Mozilla (despite it's occasional annoying bugs) for some time, because of its more mature feature set. For all of the talk about speed, Mozilla, after a sluggish launch, seems more than fast enough for me on nearly any web page.

Perhaps Safari's feature set will never expand very much ever. Apple's may well want Safari to be the iPhoto of web browsers, leaving advanced power-user features up to third party software to tackle.

I'd be pleased if the javascript worked properly... I am damned if I'm rewriting all my websites to make Safari render them properly...

is it just me or does the new update (v51) crash a LOT more than the previous build?

    i've had four crashes today <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" />

BTW: whilst trying to find the crash log i stumbled on this web page:

    file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Shortcuts.html

it lists all of safari's shortcuts some of which are disabled. anyone know what the "radar" is?

Try trashing the Safari cache. I haven't had a single crash sice it's been out.

That's what I would do first. With some other apps, where you don't have this option, you can find the cache file in the user's Library folder and toss it in the trash. This is how I solved an iPhoto crashing problem months ago. Seems to be my primary troubleshooting measure (followed by fixing permissions and then trashing preferences).

Around the first day Safari came out I read that someone found a message in the Safari package referring to an expiration date sometime in June. So at least we can expect an update well before then. Apple will not push it to the edge.

Speaking of long-in-the-tooth betas, what's up with iCab?

Every site I visit (Bank, Credit Cards, Mac Sites, Insurance, Phone & Utilities) work fine with Safari. The ones that don't don't work in IE either--except for TitanTV and Ticketmaster.com.

iCab was running great under OS 9. It used some ugly icons, but worked great despite its perennial "beta" status (the thing went from .9 through 2.9 entirely as beta as I recall). For whatever reason, since OS X came out, it's been a dog. Its developers were such hardcore Classic gurus, I don't think they took OS X's imminent release seriously.

The "Welcome Safari Users" logo is no longer on the Apple website.

The first couple days Safari was out you could use it with Wells Fargo. Then it stopped working and they had some verbage saying that it wouldn't work with beta version browsers. I'm guessing they suddenly got a whole bunch of people logging in with Safari and it spooked them.

I called them and asked them to upgrade their software to support Safari.

I've had quite a few crashes. I've sent all the crash logs to Apple through the bug reporting tool. Quickly glancing at them reveals that something to do with incorrectly formatted GIF images may be a factor.

To answer your question I believe radar is the system used within Apple to track bugs/issues/to-do in a similar vein to Mozilla's bugzilla.
