I also have a MBP 2.4 and whenever I have to open CS3 applications I notice how much slower it is than the Mac Pro. I think it is a combination of factors: HDD speed, only 3 gigs of ram and one less processor, to name a few.

Either way I'm not going to spend a ton of cash on a display that is just a placeholder for a new display. It's a lot better looking than my last one anyway. - 17" Studio display 1280x1024 -

And no I'm not dating Jessica Biel, but I am available if she is interested.

Well I installed four 500GB drives in this beast a couple of days ago and I can tell you that a four-way RAID 0 stripe is pretty damned impressive!

I would love to keep this configuration, but the increased likelihood of data loss scares me shitless.

I'll be reconfiguring the system as RAID 0+1 once I get my paws on a Mac Pro RAID card, but for the time being I'll use two two-way RAID 0 stripe sets and back everything up manually. A two-way RAID 0 is pretty damn fast on this system!

Hey onlooker ? did you get an 8GB system from Apple, or did you upgrade the memory yourself?

If you upgraded it yourself, did you notice a big difference in performance between 2?8GB?

By the way, onlooker, I have some mathematical simulations that I need to run. Any chance you want to run them?

How long have you been waiting for your "dream" apple machine Lemon?

It's been at least five years, hasn't it?

I got to try out the old G5 tower the other day, and it feels a lot faster than my 2.16g macbook pro, just doing standard stuff like web browsing. I would hope that the Xeon tower is faster still, and I can't imagine not seeing the difference between the tower and laptop when the old G5 tower cleans the laptops clock...

No way did I buy RAM, or HD's from Apple. I got 5x 500GB Drives also. (1 External)

I never used the 2GB. I pulled that RAM and installed 4x 2GB FB-DIMM's pretty much right away. BearFeats ran some tests, and they said 2GB sticks out performed the 1GB ones. They also recommended filling it to capacity. I think I'll wait. it was expensive enough.

I'm just waiting for my copy of windows to arrive so I can play some Crysis. Well... and load Zbrush 3.1, and Softimage XSI, but I think I'm actually more excited about Crysis than I am about my software.

Hey Messiah - bit of an ask here ... can you post what your 4 way Stripe reads n writes ?

    Interested ...

But yeah - it's a crash and burn scenario.

That said I've been running a two way with manual back up for the last year on a quad 2.66.

Regular drive maintenance has helped - zero the thing and reformat.

    cheers

I've got it set up as two two-ways at the moment, but when I get the RAID card I'll probably set it up as a four-way again, if only to see what it's like. I'll test it four-way with and without the card, and probably 0+1 as well.

Did you have a particular benchmark in mind?

I just order my 2.8ghz 8 core system with 4GB of RAM, Nvidia 8800 graphic card, dual super drives, and 500GB hard drive. I think I'm going to be a very happy camper...

    "onlooker and others..."

where did you get your Ram from? I typically use OWC but I am curious.

Also, what internal HDs did you go with? I can;'t make up my mind what to get.

    Thanks for the info!

OWC is a great way to go. Just make sure, whatever you buy, that it comes with the heat sinks that apple recommends. There are some people that try to sell it without. OWC is a good choice

Not that it matters, but there is at least one 64 bit Adobe product that I am aware of. Coldfusion 8 for Solaris IS 64 bit. CF8 on Mac, not. Regardless of CS3's lack of 64 bit I still think everything is a bit snappier in Leopard as opposed to Tiger. It may be that Leopard manages memory a bit better.

This is a good one for those involved with video - a freebie system test from AJA

Read about it here first http://www.aja.com/html/support_kona3_swd.htm Scroll down to Utilities and Optional dl's

I'm still ummming and ahhing whether or not to sell this quad and go up to an octo.

At the mom I think I'll wait for the next round of proc updates. But if there's a compelling reason ...

Thanks again - just when you find the time of course.

    Yeah. 8 actually.

It's either going to be a quad core iMac or a Nehalem by the looks of it...

And that puts me to Autumn. Unless something nice comes this way June time. Which on Apple's timetable seems unlikely. I'm a big fan of the iMac. But the GPU is waay under powered.
