Need software for learning Basic...

Hey, I'm taking my first computer programming class (learning Basic) and I'm using some program called True Basic 2.7 on the Macs running OS 8 at school. Is there a basic program (preferably free) for Mac OS X so that I can practice at home? I'm horrible at this and the teacher doesn't explain anything. I'd rather teach myself using the school's text book. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Basic?! That's a horrible language to learn programming with. No languages these days use that style of programming. I'd much rather learn using <a href="http://www.schemers.org/"; target="_blank">Scheme</a>, <a href="http://www.haskell.org/"; target="_blank">Haskell</a>, <a href="http://www.cs.uu.nl/~afie/helium/index.html"; target="_blank">Helium</a>, or even an ugly language like Java

That said, I would check <a href="http://freshmeat.net/browse/878/?topic_id=878"; target="_blank">freshmeat</a> for a Basic interpreter. Perhaps <a href="http://www.yabasic.de/"; target="_blank">Yabasic</a> will be of use.

I highly recommend looking into other languages in your spare time (if you do enjoy programming), because Basic isn't going to get you good habits.

Definetely, Basic is archaic and now completely useless. I'd drop that class, it will only ruin your programming skills. OOP is now and the future.

You can get a 30-day trial of <a href="http://realbasic.com/"; target="_blank">Realbasic</a> for free to build OS X apps in BASIC.

Sorry to hijack your thread Wolfeye but my son is at school in Scotland and is forced to learn something called COMAL. Does anyone know anything about this , and in particular, is there any Mac / Linux "version" he could use to program on his Mac? His computing teacher has told him that if he wants to go on to do the next grade (Higher) he will have to buy a PC to practice on..... and I don't want that ( to be fair, neither does my son). <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" />
