Chimera vs. Safari

Just thought I would pose the question...what one do you still prefer, if it's even still a competition?



I don't know if anybody else has noticed this, but when I use Safari to load a site it seems like it gets hung-up for a scant couple of second while trying to load the page. Sometimes if you just press Stop and hit return on the address bar, it immediately loads the page. I haven't noticed any problems with Chimera in this regard.



In addition, I think Chimera seems to load pages a smidgen faster. Perceptively, at least. I'm wondering what others out there have to say.



I really like Safari nonetheless and hope the problems I experience are part of vetting out the bugs through a mass beta test.

    Chimera feels about 2x as fast as Safari for me, whether I'm at home on my piddling 112 kbps IDSL connection or if I'm at the digital Niagra Falls of my dorm's broadband connection. Safari is slow, but that's not it... it also doesn't have tabs (a big part of my browsing at AI), it doesn't put windows in the right place, and it is too complicated for organizing bookmarks. I think I'll stay with Chimera and then give Safari another chance once it's out of beta.

    another vote for chimera. i don't really know what all the fuss is about safari. now that i loaded my iBook with ram, it is a little faster, but still loads pages at about 25% slower than chimera.



    not to mention the tab thing. go chimera! chimera seems faster with every release. when it moves to mozilla 1.3, that will be another leap forward.



    maybe safari will catch up with chimera when it gets out of beta, it will be interesting.

    umm if you you note my Signature at the bottom of my post you'll notice I am rather a fan of Safari, or should I say was a fan! It isnt bad but after using it a good bit it doesnt work on alot of pages, and that really sucks for me! So until then, back to IE. Boy IE really sucks indeed in comparison but it'll do!





    I still switch between the two browsers alot depending on what I am doing.

    Safari does seem to hang sometimes before going to a site. It does this to me a lot at the macnn forums. Most of the time though, Safari feels plenty fast to me.



    I still use chimera if Safari can't get to it and have all but eliminated IE.

    Safari seems just as fast if not faster then Chimera for me. The only thing from Chimera I miss is tabs.

    This is the one feature that I feel Safari does better than any other browser.



    I'm also feeling the connection hangs, slow flash performance, improper rendering, and am missing tabs; It's still beta though, so who can say.



    The latest nightly does indeed feel significantly faster than Safari.

    It is kinda cool how you can have that whole big database of bookmarks, yes, but there seem to be too many places to put 'em. I just like to have the often-used ones in my location bar and the rarely-used ones in the menu, that's all. Although with some customization and streamlining I'm sure I could get everything to go smoothly with Safari's (very powerful) system.



    The other drawbacks are preventing me, though.

    Safari get my thumbs up.



    Its bookmark functions are second to none. And its flash compatability is better than Chimera. But both kick IE's ass. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

    IE? What is it? I can't remember. There were a browser named this way? ;-)



    Chimera. But Safari isn't too bad.



    About bookmark feature: I like to watch at all my bookmarks (left or right side) while surfing. This thing is available in Chimera and in IE. Is it possible even in Safari?

    I've become enamored with the Snap Back button while surfing AI. Safari seems to fly for me. Feels faster than Chimera. Although I still think that OmniWeb has the best looking interface and haven't given up on it yet.

    Chimera. Its faster, has tabs and no metallic UI.

    What is the last version of chimera you use? 0.4? What's your system. I've never heard anyone call safari sooooooo much faster...

    Safari. Here's a quick list of reasons just off the top of my head.
    • Faster start time.

    • Native widgets and text fields -- this is a BIG one.

    • Full text service support for things like the spelling service.

    • Excellent bookmark manager.

    • Proper support for favicons -- Chimera completely ignores the HTML code for the favicon path.

    • Better drag-and-drop support.

    • Better URL copying.

    • Better QuickTime and Flash integration (no scrolling weirdness where the image is not drawn in sync with the page).

    • Much smoother page scrolling.

    • Much faster rendering of pages that use justified text.

    • The Google search bar -- I use it constantly.

    • Better download manager.

    • Better text size handling -- I can't believe that Chimera still doesn't get this right.

    • Quick access to enable/disable popup blocking from the app menu -- I use this a lot when logging into my university's site that throws a popup for the authentication window.

    • The URL bar acts more like a regular text field -- I can press up and down to go to the beginning and end of it when the auto-fill doesn't kick in.

    • Smaller download manager. Look at Chimera's download manager after downloading 5 or 6 or more things. Yikes!

    • Quicker forward and back loading.

    And to top it all off, most pages seem to load a tad faster in Safari as well.



    I don't really use SnapBack; so, that doesn't sway my opinion. The only real advantage Chimera has over Safari now is the tabs. After a few weeks of using Safari, though, i find that I really don't miss them that much anyway. In Chimera, clicking tabs as they were loading could be a painfully slow process. I'm actually part glad to be rid of that delay now. The huge array of options available through the cryptic *.js files for Chimera don't add anything for me. I don't want to have to learn how those options work and neither does the typical web user. I've tried tweaking things like the terrible font sizing via those prefs files but cn never get things just right. Ah well.

    i like safari more, that integrated google search is amazing! snapback is very handy as well.





    i've never really been a huge fan of chimera.

    Safari has a really bad problem with cookies. That makes it useless for me. They have this novel new feature that lets you only accept cookies from site that you actually navigate to. I think that's super-cool, but I have a feeling, when they implemented that, they broke something important in the cookie stuff. I hope they straighten that out soon, so I can switch from Chimera.



    Oh, and, of course, tabbed browsing (without any hacks).

    Chimera seems a bit faster than Safari for me, mainly because the latter seems to hang a lot (on a DP1250). Chimera renders pages WAAAAY more accurately than Safari. I don't like how Chimera reads cached pages slowly though, but tabs are nice. The UI, though not native widgets, look close enough.

Oh, I could rant for pages (and I have before! ) about all the things that break from the standard behavior. That ALONE is enough to very quickly turn me to just about ANY other browser. Shoot, even Mozilla handles these text fields better. I suspect that there are a number of bug fixes to correct the text field behavior in the Mozilla trunk, but Chimera isn't getting them since it's stuck back in its own 1.0.1 branch. Ah well. *sigh*
