The future of Internet Explorer

With the development of Chimera and its expanding user base and with the impending release of a final version of Safari, do you think that the development of IE will continue?

Already MS has let the Mac version fall far behind its PC counterpart, and now nearly every other browser out there for the Mac blows it away in terms of speed. However, it still seems to be the most compatible one available right now (although Chimera is getting better all the time). Will MS axe IE for the Mac and let Apple take the reins of default web browsing experience? Or will a 6.0 version ever be released with many improvements?

Additionally, do you think that Apple will cease to preinstall it as the default browser as soon as Safari 1.0 is released?

Tantek Celik, part of W3C's CSS working group and employed by Microsoft for working at IE/Mac's Rendering Engine, recently said that MSN 8 for Mac will feature an updated "Tasman" engine.

Apple will probably still install IE in new macs for the near future until Safari gains more prominence and out of beta.

This is probably to assure potential switchers that they can still surf the net. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

But once these switchers try out safari, they will of know better.

Safari and Keynote and MPEG4 and Open Source and etc etc etc

Apple is saying to Microsoft: And you thought we didn't have balls!

Microsoft can now fight on Apple's home turf or not. Their choice. I call it a 50/50 thing.

    Competition is good.

Until recently, there was only IE and Netscape. Netscape faded away (only got 5% left in the most recent stats), so Apple had to rely on 'smaller' browsers (Chimera, Omni, Opera, iCab,...). I think it's a good thing Apple takes it in it's own hands.

apple should bundle safari as the only browser, BUT the default homepage should link to an "alternative browsers page"
