Apple needs to realize they will be copied and copied and copied until the buzzards have picked their flesh from their bones. But you can't sue over "look and feel" <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

It runs very fast on my PIII600 desktop. No comparison to iPhoto on my iBook. But in general my PIII is super snappy with all software it runs. Although I never loaded a huge library or anything. There is no dynamic resizing or any of the class of iPhoto. Its slideshow feature is laughably stupid and does run slow. I assume this is the same version as the one I tried a few months ago.

Now that my baby PB is finally en route, I in the hunt for a digital camera. While iPhoto is nice and simple and all, I wonder if there aren't better (faster, slimmer) alternatives to iPhoto for use on the mac. The thing that bugs me about iPhoto is that it does little iAppy proprietary things (or so I've read on these and other pages) like forcing photos into a hidden DB, and refusing to work on external HDD's? Is that right, it doesn't sound right. iPhoto woud be great with a nice big external HDD.

PS, now I just have to wait for Fuji to release the 6/12MP successor to the F602 and I'll be all set.

A good alternative to iPhoto is <a href="http://www.caffeinesoft.com"; target="_blank">Curator</a>, and add <a href="http://www.caffeinesoft.com"; target="_blank">PixelNhance</a> for basic image editing. There are lots of others too. Just check out <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com"; target="_blank">VersionTracker</a> or <a href="http://www.macupdate.com"; target="_blank">MacUpdate</a>.

I have heard of several people using iPhoto with external databases... Most of the various reviews and suggestions were from this board, in fact, but I don't think one can really do a proper search here.

I have my database on a larger partition than the system, mostly because of some 'issues' with the system I had a few versions back. Just place an alias of where you want your iphoto directory to be in your users' folder. If it is on a removable drive, it should work...

    Give it a shot.

You can also try iView Media Pro. This allows you to catalog not only photos by video and many other types of files.

For iPhoto, I believe iPhoto Librarian would allow you to set up another folder on an external HDD.

Although slow, I still like iPhoto for its integration with other services and products. I ordered a 16 x 20 print through the integrated service and received it in 2 days - beautiful.
