GIMP at OPENOSX.COM
I found links that say Gimp (ie Linux Photoshop) is available for MacosX, I was wondering if anyone has this, and what the implications are running under OSX. Aparently it installs an Xwindows GUI, which I don't have a problem with, But as a non-unix-techie, Im just wondering if it is as easy to install as they say.

<strong>there are a number of easy Xwindows installs outthere, and from what I've heard the MacGimp works pretty well for running gimp. I wouldn't mess around with fink if you don't like the command line. There are double clickable installers for XFree86 (look at <a href="http://ww1.osxgnu.org/software/Xwin/xfree86/"; target="_blank">http://ww1.osxgnu.org/software/Xwin/xfree86/</a>; for example) and a one command-line lots of software install at <a href="http://www.gnu-darwin.org"; target="_blank">www.gnu-darwin.org</a>

EDgar, I decided to try the install at osxgnu, just because I was bored, but I can't get it to work. Maybe it's because I had a previous X install. I dunno. But now I want to get rid of it and my previous X install, if possible, so I can start from scratch. Is there an easy way to get rid of everything and start over? TIA.
you can either delete /usr/X11R6 which will basically wipe your XFree install, or you can install the package you were using before (moving a tarball to / and sudo gnutar -zxvf xfreetarball should overwrite the previous install of XFree.
(note, there may be a few other X11 files on your drive if you really want to wipe them they should be in /private/etc/X11, /lib/X11, /include/X11, usr/local/include/X11, /usr/local/lib/X11, and possibly /sw/etc/X11 and /sw/lib/X11 if you've been using fink. )
did your previous install of XFree work? are you running 10.1?
<strong>torifile, it depends on what you mean by removeing it. If you had an existing XFree install it overwrote it (though it probably did not overwrite any files in your home directory such as your .xinitrc)

Thanks, Ed. My previous install did work without a problem, though I could never get gnome installed successfully. I dug around a bit and got most of the files erased, I think. I'm thinking about reinstalling but I need to clear out some hd space first (who knew 10gigs was so small?). I'm running 10.1.1 (whatever the last legit update was...I can't keep track anymore). But, since trying the gnu-darwin install, I keep getting a strange error in my terminal when I try to clear it. it says, "'vt100': unknown terminal type." Any ideas about what that means? I tried deleting preferences and other user accounts and they all give the same error.
spicoli I doubt it has anything to do with Sosumi. what happens when you try starting it from the terminal (type startx -- -quartz) tell me what it says.
