Anyone know if and when Snow Leopard will be released for beta?

It already has been: to developers who were at WWDC. It will presumably also be released to ADC select members at some point. Apple does not do open betas of their operating systems.

    That was a pre-alpha.

There's actually a Snow Leopard torrent out already. That's about as open a release as there needs to be. Not much point installing it at this stage though. If it's got until next year before release, it may have a lot of bugs in it.

It would be interesting to know if it is already better/faster than Leopard though and if it has been stripped down at all. The torrent is still a dual layer disc size so it can't be much stripped down yet unless they've added a whole load of other crap we don't need.

Hmm... this is probably a special p2p edition.

Traditionally, Apple has treated its Developer Previews and Betas as distinct entities. This is the former, not the latter.

Go take a look at OS X DP2 and DP3 for example.
