There's actually a Snow Leopard torrent out already. That's about as open a release as there needs to be. Not much point installing it at this stage though. If it's got until next year before release, it may have a lot of bugs in it.
It would be interesting to know if it is already better/faster than Leopard though and if it has been stripped down at all. The torrent is still a dual layer disc size so it can't be much stripped down yet unless they've added a whole load of other crap we don't need.

Traditionally, Apple has treated its Developer Previews and Betas as distinct entities. This is the former, not the latter.
