To me, this sounds like one of the more likely things I've heard. Few reasons:
1. Sufficiently exciting yet sufficiently disappointing....fits in perfectly with where Apple's idea of 'revolutionary' and this forum's idea of 'revolutionary' part ways. Sounds like great new hardware from Apple (probably innovative in several ways we haven't thought of yet), but just lacking enough to have people here complaining that it wasn't a supertablet. Classic, and thus perfectly fitting.
2. Steve's keynote scheduled the next evening to show off Apple's array of Digital Hub solutions suggests a couple of photo/video products like this.
3. New iApps make sense. iTunes 2 was built to be aware of the iPod. So, naturally, a video camera would require iMovie 3, and a still photo cam would require iPhoto in order to maintain the Mac's advantage as an integrated digital hub.
I wonder what iPod-compatible means. The G5 being ready is unexpected to me also - its introduction alone, along with the iMac is enough for me. If this is true, anything beyond the G5 and the iMac is just icing on the cake.

I realy didnt think the G5 was going to be out but now I think it will be after all.

*lol* How true, how true. Either way though I see no reason to give this piece of speculation more credence than any of the others we've seen. I think it's pretty clear a new iMac will hit the scenes, but beyond that it's anybody's guess as to how they will disappoint us. There are so many possible combinations given past experience and knowledge of the ever-growing digital hub philosophy.

Perhaps the cameras have no storage of their own, and pass all data directly to the iPod. 5 gigs of DV video ain't much, but perhaps they'll have onboard variable hardware compression...
Firewire would be very useful on a still camera - megapixel images (especially uncompressed tiff) are slow to copy off even with removable media like compact flash, whose readers tend to be connected at USB speeds.
I would much rather Apple make all firewire cameras (and other devices as well, like CD-Burners) iPod compatible (meaning, I assume, that you could download pictures and video directly to the iPod for storage, although given the iPod's smallish 5 gig hard disk I think that this would only really be useful for still pictures). However, since just about every digital camera I know of is USB, that wouldn't really work. I suppose Apple could be thinking of a firewire digital camera that could download pictures to the iPod, but what would be the point? The only people taking that many pictures (or ones that would be so large as to require this much external storage) would be professionals, and there is no way Apple is coming out with a camera to satisfy professionals (if only because it would be way too expensive for the majority of their users).

Doesn't firewire allow for device-to-device transfer without interference of a computer? Then to me it would mean that you can ofload the pics from the digital camera onto your iPod, shoot some more, load to iPod....
I still don't see why or how Apple would release an Apple-branded digital video camera and/or Apple-branded DV camera. I personally think there are enough viable options for that on the market today. Couple with that the fast-moving nature of CCD imaging chips, and I doubt Apple will sink a lot of money into that market.
We'll see soon enough.

I would be more upset with Apple for this than anything they have done to upset me in recent years.
Unless???? Apple used a G5 name scheme on the Apolo G4 to get Moto out of their contract so Apple could buy their PPC devision, or whatever rumor that was a while back.
I just hope for a reintroduction of an all new iMac for Apple loyalists, and fanatics. And 1.4, or 1.6 GHz Dual Processor PowerMac with DDR, some USB2.0, and GigaWire for myself. If Apple want's to beat my expectations they will re-introduce the Newton as well w/pocket X,, or an airport enabled iTablet to use around the house so I don't have to go to my G4 every time I wan't to get online. I just reach for the coffe table.

I click on rewind in iMovie, the camera rewinds, I click on 'import', it imports video .... if I export to the camera (i usually just make quicktime movies) that works fine too. If the sony could record directly to a FW HD without the iMac in between, thus foregoing the 1:1 time consuming import process in iMovie. That makes me think, we had high-speed philips cassette tape deck transfer dual decks a long time ago. Why couldn't the DV be imported/exported > realtime/
Anyway, another thing I'd like is a mini-dv deck/tray/slot built into the machines (iMac/iBook).
A direct to DVD process. Or direct to iDVD would be great, too.

2. Years ago Kodak liscensed QT for integration into cameras. It hit the rumor sites, but I never heard what happened. Did Kodak back off some plans that Apple is now picking up?
I agree with stepson that things are close to being integrated anyway. If you wanted to drop video onto an iPod directly w/o the Mac, couldn't you just put that ability into the iPod and not have to make a whole new camera? Apple could do that now with Sony camera's couldn't they? Maybe not the FW yet, but that is probably only a few months away.

I think this just referred to advertising the native file formats of digital cameras as Quicktime, especially the the motion picture files. Other manufacturers were already in the market with this licensing (ie: Olympus)...
