OS 9, YA newsreader, don't know why anyone would use anything else, especially if you download Apps and media from alt.binaries.macintosh .applications
I have a more basic question than that... How do I read news? I mean, are there servers or something that I need to connect to and what are they? When I'm at home, I can connect to earthlink b/c it's my isp, but at the university, where I do most of my internet, eh, work, I can't connect to it. Any recommendations?
I use (multi-threaded) MT-Newswatcher. Works great in OS X (classic) as well.
In terms of news servers. Your ISP usually carries a news server. usually news.ispname.com. You can also pay for a dedicated news server. I use easynews (http://www.easynews.com). I pay $9.95 a month and have 6 GB limit/month. Depending on what you want to do, you can just read news or download binaries, if the latter i would pay for a dedicated news service for the retention, complete posts, etc.

earthlink (and most ISPs) don't allow you to use any of their services unless you are dialed in/connected to their DSL/cable line. You can't send mail with their mail severs or use their news servers. It's a shame since their news servers are pretty decent. If you want to access usenet, you will either have to see if your university carries one (unlikely) or pay for news server. there are many out there with different tiers of pricing. Some good ones include:

I too use MT Newswatcher. I've tried out many many usenet clients and, at least for Classic Mac OS, MT was the best due to its awesome threading.
But every newsreader for X I've tried lacks features that are present in their more-mature Classic counterparts. At least MT behaves well in Classic mode...
So what is the BEST OS X newsreader. For those who don't want to use classic mode. Don't say they all suck the same. Which one is the best for what is avaialble right now?
