I get to the point where i choose a location and the installer reads...

You cannot install Security Update 2008-005 (PowerPC) on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.

Any ideas? I have 19.45GB free on my hard drive (PPC G4)

Are you trying to install the standalone (manually downloaded) or the software update version?

The software update stalls on restarting (I let it go for 3 hours) so I downloaded the stand alone version and that is the one that I get the message...

The chances are the update has been installed correctly and the message you see is quite normal if an update has already been applied.

I suggest the following which may help

    Repair Permissions

Check HD for errors using disk utility (If any are found boot from the install DVD and repair be sure not to repair permissions from it as it will cause issues if the system version is higher)

Grab either Onyx or Main menu and do the following

    Remove Font Caches

    Remove all browser Caches

    Remove all temporary files

    Clean all users cache

Check plist files for corruption (Main Menu does this and may help to fix issues if any are found)

    Update prebindings (helps)

    Update Whatis Database

    run all cron scripts

Restart your mac and it should be slightly faster and the restart after installs should go away. If it doesn't then the install script in the update is playing havoc.
