A Roadmap for Tuesdays in September (??)

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
? September 9th, we know, is mainly an iPod/iTunes event. That said, it seems that Apple is encouraging the press to attend even more strongly than usual. A hint that they will be making more Tuesday annoucements?

? The 16th: the end of Apple's back-to-school promotion, and presumably the start of their holiday consumer sales season. The perfect time to unveil new MacBooks/ Pros, new/faster iMacs (though I suspect the quad-cores won't really be announced until the January Expo in '09 ), and at long last, new 30-inch-capable Mac minis?

? The 23rd: the very day that Adobe unveils CS4, its flagship suite for creative pros. Historically, many of these pro's wait on their (powered by Xeon) Mac Pro purchases until a new version of CS comes out. How interesting then, that Intel is slated to release all-new six-core Xeon processors a few days before? (And in conjunction, new LED Cinema Displays too?)

? The 30th: from past experience, we know that Apple has typically used the last day of the quarter as an all-new-product sales benchmark (like the 1st iPhone on June 29, 2007). Tablet Macs, perhaps?

    Because we know now that this is really only an ipod event (september 9th) are you saying that the separate macbook event would be on the 23rd or 30th of September?

    We don't know this is an iPod-only event. We infer that from the invitation, but right now only Apple knows.

    What will the 6 cores systems go for starting at $2500 with 1 quard core add $200 for 1 6 core add $700 for 2 6 cores. With only 2gb base ram and a week video card.

    Apples needs $1100 to $2200 tower as the mac pro starts at $2300 now.

    The new Intel 6-cores chips are not intended for the Mac Pro. Those are multi-processor server chips (dunnington) and each will cost the price of a current Mac Pro.

    Xeon X7470 - > six cores, frequency 2.66 GHz, system bus 1066 MHz, TDP=120 W, cache 16 MB, $2729;

    Xeon E7459 - > six cores, frequency 2.4 GHz, system bus 1066 MHz, TDP=80 W, cache 12 MB, $2301;

    Xeon E7440 - > four core, frequency 2.4 GHz, system bus 1066 MHz, TDP=80 W, cache 12 MB, $1980;

    Xeon E7430 - > four core, frequency 2.13 GHz, system bus 1066 MHz, TDP=80 W, cache 12 MB, $1391;

    Xeon E7420 - > four core, frequency 2.13 GHz, system bus 1066 MHz, TDP=80 W, cache 8 MB, $1177;

    Xeon L7455 - > six cores, frequency 2.13 GHz, system bus 1066 MHz, TDP=50 W, cache 12 MB, $2729;

    Xeon L7445 - > four core, frequency 2.13 GHz, system bus 1066 MHz, TDP=50 W, cache 12 MB, $1980.

    What should be used next in the Mac Pro are Gainestown cpus (Nehalem architecture) from 2.66 to 3.20GHz, quad-cores, hyperthreading, QPI interconnect. Up to 2 cpus/board. Q1 2009.

    Thanks mjteix for the Xeon info, I was not aware that these chips would be so expensive . I still think Apple will update the Mac Pros in some way to co-incide will the launch of Adobe's CS4: new LED-based Cinema Displays, a newer video card or two (either something from ATI's Radeon HD 3000 or 4000-series, or else nVidia's 9000-series), or maybe even (for the holiday consumer sales drive), some super-sweet Blu-Ray SuperDrives!

    I don't think they will update the Mac Pro before Gainestown cpus and the associated chipset are available, no matter what Adobe launches. AFAIK, the Gainestown cpus will not be available in quantity before january (was supposed to be october/november). We will see. Of course, Apple could update the BTO options for the Mac Pro in between: new video cards, bluray optical drives, etc.
