I have been looking at a macbook for over a year now (on and off) and I want one! But, I am not sure when I should buy one.

I know right now I can buy one and get a free Ipod Touch (and then sell that one eBay for at least $150-200) and I think I have $100 off the purchase price because I am Faculty at a University (so basically a macbook for $250-300 off the purchase price).

The problem is I keep reading about new releases and what not and I have no idea if I should wait to buy one or not!?

HELP! PLEASE?! Anyone?

First of all, welcome. I'm sure that you'll enjoy Mac once you get used to it.

From what I've read, the Macbook and MacBook Pro will both be upgraded sometime soon (the third quarter of 2008), however, the 'buy a MacBook and get a free iPod Touch' will be ending soon. Now usually when Apple puts out any new hardware, or upgrades to the next generation, they give out store credit (or something along those lines) to the people who had recently purchased the now outdated hardware.

So its really up to you. You can either take advantage of the iPod deal, or wait to get a newly updated laptop.

Since you can get the University discount, purchasing the newer version of the MacBook might be better, however with new technology comes new problems. If I were you, I would buy the MacBook or MacBook Pro now and get the iPod deal. When the new laptops come out, let the fanatics buy them and find all the bugs. Plus, when the laptops are updated, the older MacBooks are bound to get some sort of software update. And maybe you could get some store credit when they come out with the next generation.

    Hope this helped you out.

Good luck and welcome to the world of Mac

I'm in the same situation as the thread starter and I really appreciate that reply! I think I might buy one now because I want the white color instead of the purported silver that the new MacBooks MIGHT be. Also, I might give the money to a college student whom is also a family member to get the iPod Touch too.

I have a question about the Touch you get with that deal. Is there a chance you can get store credit on BOTH of them? They just came out with new Touchs, which I'm assuming won't be part of the deal that ends soon, and then the new MacBooks soon most likely. What do you think?

I looked at the Apple website and it says that the deal does not include the iPods introduced yesterday, and I'm not sure if you can get a rebate on both of them. It did say something about buying through the education store so check that out, and the iPod offer ends on September 15, so try to make that decision quickly. Sorry that I couldn't be more help.

I got the iPod deal, and no it it wasn't yesterdays release, it was the version just prior. So, an iPod Touch absolutely free, is a whale of a deal compared to paying for the new model! YMMV
