Fonts?

This is something I should have figured out a long time ago, but where can I both get fonts, and how can I install them?

that depends on what kind/quality of typefaces you want. if you do a search on the internet for "free fonts," then i am sure that you will find many, many fonts. Other fonts will come bundled with software, esp. word processing. illustrator, and photoshop come with some too.

if you want really nice, well designed faces, try places like

    <a href="http://fontshop.com"; target="_blank">FontShop</a> or <a href="http://www.emigre.com/fonts.html"; target="_blank">Emigre</a>.

Remember though, that not all typefaces are free, many of the well designed ones are going to cost you money. But this money is what enables these designers to live.

Whoops. I meant to ask if fonts are compatible between OS9 and X... Also, how would I go about installing them? Thanks.

I don't have OS X, so I can't really answer those questions. I would assume they are compatible though. In OS 9, all you have to do is put them in the Fonts folder in the System Folder, or use something like ATM Deluxe or Suitcase to manage and activate them, but I don't know the procedure for X. Sorry

And now I have to make a confession. I just assumed that fonts were included on the Photoshop disk, because I knew that there were some on the Illustrator, but I just checked mine (PS 5, ancient, i know), and there are none. sorry about the confusion.

Another thought. If you are looking to buy typefaces,

    <a href="http://www.adobe.com/type/main.html"; target="_blank">Adobe</a> has a rather nice library...

Fonts are a piece of cake in OS X:

If you want fonts available to all users on your system, place them in /Library/Fonts

If you want fonts only available to you, place them in /Users/USERNAME/Library/Fonts

(remember that they can't be in sub-folders... they must all be loose in the Fonts folder.)

Another thing you might consider is a font manager, such as <a href="http://www.extensis.com/suitcase/"; target="_blank">Suitcase</a> or <a href="http://www.fontreserve.com/"; target="_blank">Font Reserve</a>. These will allow you to stick all of your fonts in a folder somewhere so that they are not yet seen by the system. When you need a particular font, you can use the font manager to temporarily activate it. The benefit is that you can keep only the core fonts (required by system and apps) in the Library folders, keeping that font menu small and quick in your apps. (nice when you have hundreds of fonts like I do!) Once the font is activated, it will appear in the font menu and you can use it (no need to reboot). You can also assign fonts to sets (Favorites, Display, Home Page, etc.) so that you can automatically activate all the fonts you need for a particular project, then deactivate them when you're done. These programs are a great way to organize and manage your fonts. I use Suitcase because I like the instant preview, but FontReserve is reportedly better at organizing large libraries of fonts. Your mileage may vary.

<a href="http://www.myfonts.com"; target="_blank">MyFonts</a> is another nice place to buy fonts.

I believe that X will scrounge the 9 System Folder for fonts when it boots.

I have also heard that X supports the use of PC fonts as well as the mac fonts.

IN this months Macworld UK magazine, there is a big feature on OSX fonts, I've only skimmed through it, BUT there are 5, yes 5 font folders in OSX. AGGGHHH. Another reason to stay OS9!

BTW, Fonts are the same as in Os9. Canvas 8 ships with about 500 fonts, Postscript and truetype, and they work fine in both systems

Thanks. I did try some 9 fonts, and at least with my first tests, they did not work... Thanks for all the help. I may purchase some of the ones from the sites you guys listed tho.
