Rebuild desktop under X?

    If you run sudo fs_usage immediately after you boot up, you'll see that the Finder automatically starts cataloging all apps and their icons. I believe this is the equivalent of the older "rebuilding desktop" method.

    I think I read somewhere (the OS X Missing Manual by David Pogue, maybe) that OS X doesn't require you to rebuild the desktop. What's up, are you getting general slowdown and generic icons where the originals should be?

    part of having a new OS should be significantly less maintenance. at least thats how it should be

    The reason why I ask this is sometimes for some unknown reasons some files are opened by the wrong applications even I set them in the get info

    I think osx does this automaticly every time you start up
