  Pretty painless. Haven't really got to play around with the update, although, my phone has never really given me any problems. I like that the Genius playlist creation is available directly on the iPhone 3G. At any rate, it all downloaded and installed pretty quickly. After the phone restarted, it said "iPhone is Activated", which I thought was weird. At any rate, I hope that this update will be an improvement for those who have had issues with their iPhone 3G.

  Updated mine successfully, as well. It seems more responsive, but that could be just because of the reboot when the firmware was updated.
