Simple solution....a solution Jobs just cannot comprehend...add about 5mm to the thickness and then you have room for more memory and a battery that can cover the entire back of the device. That could double or triple the battery life.
Of course what do I know.
Your plan is to dramatically increase the cost and the weight and the thickness of the iPhone, while simultaneously lowering the aesthetic appeal and the number of people who can buy this device that is already touted as being "too" expensive by competing HW and OS developers, and despite the iPhone battery testing on 3G is barely bested by only a couple of BB's do to the technical nature of EV-DO phones still using CDMA to make and receive calls and trumping most smartphones 3G battery usage in the industry? I can't agree to that as a viable option for Apple.
The only reason I see for Apple not to continue to thin up the iPhone is to allow for a better camera. I am not one to use a camera on a phone, but there are plenty that seem to just love camera phones.
Note: I would be one of the people who would pay more for a thicker iPhone just to get a much bigger battery. Make it 1/2" thick brick for all I care. All I mainly use is the Safari browser while using the iPod, anyway. But it's not a practical move for Apple.
It's the end of the September quarter --- you always "stuff the channel" first by shipping all available units to AT&T stores and BestBuy stores --- because revenue can be recorded right away.
Camera phone is usually for those on the spot moments where bringing a proper camera is inconvenient.
The next iPhone revision will have a better camera, remember the job posting?
32GB for a Phone? Phew thats huge, SE XPERIA which is called the iPhone killer (about any smartphones these days are called iPhone killer) can't even come close to the original iPhone capacity.
Now, if only Msia will get the official launched of iPhone. When!!!!!!!
Home activation would presumably have to come back online for O2's rollout of Pay&Go iPhones at the beginning of October here in the UK.
I'd also like to see AT&T, O2, Orange etc offering SIM only iPhone PAYG schemes that would allow tourists to buy a SIM that worked locally with their iPhone. Ie. Not a full SIM unlock, just a local unlock for the period the phone is in that country.
Yeah, based on Australian 'outright' prices, US$599 is the probable BEST price for 16GB, though it could easily be $100 more. I'm certain it won't be more than US$699.
Careful. I got harped on and sworn at by wbrasington for even suggesting such a thing would happen.

Yes, but at what cost? The very top bracket in semiconductors often costs prohibitively more.
The Nokia N96 comes with 8GB built-in and has an SDHC slot for additional storage. That fact that you can swap out SDHC cards could certainly be important to some. You may not even need to buy a single 32GB chip if multiple chips will suit you.
For me, I don't want to deal with all that, but I can certainly see the benefit to having it.
PS: Does anyone know how the iPhone's built-in flash comes to the speed of SDHC?
Just got back from the Apple Store in Plano, TX, and I have answers. According to a Genius, the shortage has nothing to do with a refresh, and everything to do with the USB Power Adapter for the iPhone 3G that Apple just recalled.
Apparently, Apple has been planning this recall for a while now, and this particular Apple store already had replacement 8Gb iPhones packaged with new USB power adapters. He even showed me the box for the new 8Gb iPhones that had just arrived yesterday...there was a little green circlular sticker on the back of the box to denote that it included the newly designed USB adapters, and not the faulty recalled ones.
So for all you hold-outs thinking 32Gb phone will arrive this Tuesday, the smart money is on not seeing a refresh of the iPhones until after Christmas. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
In what way is having it built in more elegant? Has having it built in already been a big selling point?
With built in you don't have to worry about swapping or loosing tiny memory chips. I'm not saying memory slots have no advantage. But for the sake of ease of use. Not having to worry about it adds to convenience.
Apparently it can be a selling point as other mobile phones are coming with increased internal storage.

Thank you for the bearing of Good news (to me). Canadians are already getting ripped off in the data plans Rogers is carrying. Ive been patiently waiting for the new data plans in October to start, which is in 10 days mind you. Ive been considering opting for the 8GB Model but with rumors going around, im starting to ponder on whether the 16GB will suffice. I really can't wait another 4 months for a 32GB and in my opinion 32GB is a bit too much for a cellphone.
So im guessing most of you that replied to this thread that have iphones have 16GB Models?

There is also a measure of added convenience for Apple too. Apple gets more money if you buy a whole new unit. They don't get that at all if an existing owner can just swap the chip. Maybe that's a bit of a cynical view, but it is true. They also don't have to worry about the contacts getting corroded, though I've not had that kind of problem. If they were worry about corroding contacts, maybe they wouldn't have chosen a 30 pin dock connector with such tiny pins.

Not having to worry about a missing feature adds to the convenience ? I see.
It's no different than the external SIM slot on the iPhone really, except of course most SDHC slots are spring loaded and don't require a 'special tool' to swap SIMs. Ah, but then with only one carrier, you're not likely to swap SIMs often - again, Apple adding to the convenience eh?
Really though, I don't think storage is a big deal. If you've a slot then it's a no brainer to upgrade instead of having to buy a new phone but generally you're probably going to bin the iphone in 2 years anyway when it's obsoleted by a new iphone.

Whatt?? i Just canceled tmobile and switched to ATT for a 16GB 3G 2 days ago!!!
Welcome to Apple! (And, Appleinsider).
That's insane....32GB Phone. Who else can match that?
Best observation of this thread!

Not really. Most of the competition have SDHC slots so you can stick a 32GB card in and even switch cards should you need more.

Yeah, for a couple of hundred bucks more.

32GB SDHC are about £70 inc VAT here in the UK. 16GB are about £20.

Not really as elegant as having the storage built in. Have the availability of the memory slots been a big selling point?
