With built in you don't have to worry about swapping or loosing tiny memory chips. I'm not saying memory slots have no advantage. But for the sake of ease of use. Not having to worry about it adds to convenience.
Apparently it can be a selling point as other mobile phones are coming with increased internal storage.
And if Apple had a miniSD slot, now one here would bat an eye -- same for if Apple had a removable battery on the iPhone. No one would say a word.
I just don't know why so many people are willing to be an inhibitor for Apple's continued mantra of choosing style over functionality. Or is it just that we are that vain?
There is also a measure of added convenience for Apple too. Apple gets more money if you buy a whole new unit. They don't get that at all if an existing owner can just swap the chip. Maybe that's a bit of a cynical view, but it is true. They also don't have to worry about the contacts getting corroded, though I've not had that kind of problem. If they were worry about corroding contacts, maybe they wouldn't have chosen a 30 pin dock connector with such tiny pins.
That is true this plays to Apples advantage. At the same time the average mobile phone user buys a new phone every couple of years. So this limitation won't really change normal buying habits.

Yes if you don't want to deal with separate memory cards.

It's no different than the external SIM slot on the iPhone really, except of course most SDHC slots are spring loaded and don't require a 'special tool' to swap SIMs. Ah, but then with only one carrier, you're not likely to swap SIMs often - again, Apple adding to the convenience eh?
Is their really any room left inside the iPhone for a micro card slot?
Special tool.....

Really though, I don't think storage is a big deal. If you've a slot then it's a no brainer to upgrade instead of having to buy a new phone but generally you're probably going to bin the iphone in 2 years anyway when it's obsoleted by a new iphone.
Also from what I understand the flash memory in the micro-card is not the same flash used in internal storage.

With these two changes the iPhones design would not be what it is now.

Their really is no right or wrong answer. That is the reason they make so many different phones. If enough people feel that removable batteries and micro card slots are not needed and make the iPhone profitable for Apple. Then those features were not necessarily all that functional for that group of consumers.
For more than double the price of 16GB iPhone! (at least for me since I need the data plan to get my emails everywhere)
The N96 is free in the UK on £45 tariffs, as is the iPhone. You've got to then add data to the N96 though so at the moment they're a little more expensive but not much. I'd expect it'll drop in price in the next few months though as all phones do (other than the iPhone). it's new and they're just mopping up the early adopters. N95s for instance are now on PAYG and free on £30 tariffs.
My wife and I have 30 GB 5G iPods that are already over half capacity. We have been waiting patiently for a 32 GB iPhone to make an appearance. If Apple delivers the goods then it will gain two more customers.

and the N96 comes with 16GB Internal Standard. The N95 has 8GB Standard.

Why is that a big deal? If you don't want to 'deal' with separate memory cards, don't fiddle with the slot ever.
